Wheatbelt Region — Western Australia

The Wheatbelt region surrounds the Perth metropolitan area, extending north from Perth to the Mid West region, and east to the Goldfields-Esperance region. It’s a huge area comprising about 150,000 square kilometers of land, which is twice the size of Tasmania. With a population of 72,000 people, Wheatbelt is the third most populous region in Western Australia.

With over 150 kilometers of gorgeous coastline, expanding from Guilderton to Jurien Bay, the region is paradise for aquatic lovers.

The eastern fringe of Wheatbelt is very arid and attracts mining activities for minerals like Gold, Nickel and Iron ore. The rest of the region receives abundant rainfall and the climate is very conducive for agriculture, wheat being the predominant produce. This region produces more than two-third of the total wheat produced in the State, half of its wool production, and the majority of its lamb, mutton, oranges, honey, cut flowers and a range of other agricultural and pastoral products.

Some of the great attractions in the Wheatbelt region include Wave Rock at Hyden, Mulka’s cave (which is home to Aboriginal art), Elachbutting Rock (a large granite outcrop with caves and having a magnificent wave formation), Kokerbin Rock, Cambinata Yabbies (world’s leading yabby processors), IASKA (International Art Space Kellerberrin Australia), Dalwallinu Remnant Bushland, Beacon’s Bird Life, Kadjininy Kep (a working hydrology model and amphitheatre), the Dryandra Woodland, and plenty more.

The Wheatbelt region is home to some attractive towns with great tourism potential. Some of the best-known ones include Meckering, Doodlakine, Trayning, Merredin, Beacon, Koorda, Wyalkatchem, Tammin, Merredin and Shackleton.
