Margaret River, South West
Margaret River is a town located in the South West region of Western Australia. The town was named after a river which was also named after Margaret Wyche, cousin of John Garrett Bussell, founder of the town of Busselton.
This heritage-rich town can be explored following the Margaret River Heritage Trail brochure. There are three walks offered--the River Walk, the Karri Walk, and the Bridge Walk - which provide opportunities for visitors to view scenic townscapes and surrounding areas.
All the walks mentioned above start at the Rotary Park, located at the northern part of the town. The park features a steam engine named `Kate' which was used for log hauling in the late 19th century. It was installed in the park to commemorate the timber industry in town.
There are several historic buildings in Margaret River and one of which is the Old Settlement Historical Museum, which is actually composed of several farm buildings and agricultural machinery used in the old days. The premises was established to honor the Group Settlement farms in the area and tour guides provide interesting information relating to this part of the town's history. Visitors are also treated to demonstrations of wood turning and blacksmithing. There is also a photographic museum showcasing old cameras.
Another historic structure in Margaret River is the Ellensbrook Homestead along the Ellen Brook Road. The homestead is owned and maintained by National Trust and was built for one of the early settlers of the town. The property is also a good starting point for those who wish to explore the Meekadarabee Waterfall and the Meekadarabee Cave.
The area within and around Margaret River has been found to be suitable for the cultivation of grapes. This has led to the establishment of several wineries in the area. Along Stevens Road is the Leeuwin Estate, composed of a winery, a restaurant, and an art gallery. Visitors can also have picnics in the winery's scenic grounds.
Another winery worth a visit is the Rosabrook Estate, located along Rosabrook Road. The winery has been consistently producing award-winning wines, recognized both locally and internationally.
The Colonial Brewery Company is another interesting destination for visitors. Situated along the Osmington Road, this brewery boasts of producing high quality products without the use of preservatives and additives. The establishment also features a playground to entertain children while parents take a tour of the brewery.
A visit to The Fudge Factory along Brussel Highway will surely bring delight out of each and every visitor. This is because the establishment allows visitors to view how their confectioneries are made. Apart from producing and selling different kinds of fudge, The Fudge Factory also retails teas, milkshakes, and coffee.
When looking for an ideal place to take the children to, the Sunflowers Farm is the ideal destination. Situated on the corner of Carter and Caves Roads, this animal farm contains numerous animals, some of which visitors can feed themselves.
