Kalgan, South West

Kalgan is a rural district within the City of Albany, which is located within the South West region of Western Australia.

The area derived its name from the nearby Kalgan River, which meanders through the state and empties into the Oyster Harbour. The river is one of the main tourist attractions in the area, with a number of tour companies offering river cruises on it. There are a lot of pleasant views that await those who take these cruises, with the river running through fertile farmlands, verdant forests, and granite rock formations. The river is also a popular fishing destination, being well-stocked with several freshwater fish species. There are also several nature walks located along the river, which provides ample opportunities for locals and visitors to go bird watching and catching glimpses of native animals that call the area home. The river also provides ideal setting for canoeing and waterskiing. The outdoor space around Kalgan River is also suitable for bushwalking, with lots of interesting sights and views to be enjoyed.

In the southern part of Kalgan is the Gull Rock Lake, which is surrounded by the Gull Rock Reserve. This reserve touches on the coastal part of the area, which is composed of rocky headlands and white sand beaches. These beaches are ideal for those seeking to enjoy a bit of seclusion while swimming, fishing, or having picnics. The area also contains lush vegetation that composes woodlands, forests, and open scrub heaths.

Visitors can also visit the Mount Martin Regional Botanic Park, which is accessed through the Gull Rock Road. The park boasts of an extensive cover of wildflowers which can visitors can enjoy while following several of its nature walks. The botanic park also cultivates several beautiful varieties of orchids that visitors rarely see elsewhere.

Farther east of the Kalgan district is the Two Peoples Bay, a protected area that visitors can explore to their hearts' content. It is home to the noisy scrub bird and the reserve was established primarily to protect its habitat. It has evolved into a popular outdoor destination in the area. It also has secluded beaches that are ideal for swimming and snorkeling. There are several lakes in the area - Moates Lake, Gardner Lake, and the Angrove Lake---for additional water-based recreation.

For those who wish to experience wine tasting, the Kalgan River Wines is a good destination. Located along the eastern banks of the river, this establishment welcomes visitors who wish to sample their fine wine products, considered one of the finest in the area. The winery also affords spectacular views of the river and the surrounding bush land, making the trip to the premises extremely worth the effort and the time.

On the western side of the Kalgan district is the Oyster Harbour, which is a popular recreational destination of those living in Albany and in surrounding towns and villages. The harbor is also excellent for fishing, boating, and other water-based activities. There are also numerous water birds that come to the harbor, making it ideal for bird watching. The Oyster Harbour is where the Kalgan and the King Rivers meet and is the launching point for cruises going into both rivers. There are also several spots around the harbor that are ideal settings for picnics and barbecues.
