Kalgan, South West
Kalgan is a rural district within the City of Albany, which is located within the South West region of Western Australia.
The area derived its name from the nearby Kalgan River, which meanders through the state and empties into the Oyster Harbour. The river is one of the main tourist attractions in the area, with a number of tour companies offering river cruises on it. There are a lot of pleasant views that await those who take these cruises, with the river running through fertile farmlands, verdant forests, and granite rock formations. It also has secluded beaches that are ideal for swimming and snorkeling. There are several lakes in the area - Moates Lake, Gardner Lake, and the Angrove Lake---for additional water-based recreation.
For those who wish to experience wine tasting, the Kalgan River Wines is a good destination. Located along the eastern banks of the river, this establishment welcomes visitors who wish to sample their fine wine products, considered one of the finest in the area. The winery also affords spectacular views of the river and the surrounding bush land, making the trip to the premises extremely worth the effort and the time.
On the western side of the Kalgan district is the Oyster Harbour, which is a popular recreational destination of those living in Albany and in surrounding towns and villages. The harbor is also excellent for fishing, boating, and other water-based activities. There are also numerous water birds that come to the harbor, making it ideal for bird watching. The Oyster Harbour is where the Kalgan and the King Rivers meet and is the launching point for cruises going into both rivers. There are also several spots around the harbor that are ideal settings for picnics and barbecues.
