Denmark, South West
Denmark is a coastal town located south of Western Australia. It is also located along the banks of the Denmark River. The town was named in honor of Dr. Alexander Denmark.
The area is a well-known wine-producing region and there are two wineries located within Denmark, the Goundrey's and the Tinglewood Wines.
For those seeking more than the usual wine products, there's the Bartholomews Meadery, which is located along the South Coast Highway. Apart from honeywines, the establishment also produces honey liqueur, honey ice cream, artworks, crafts, and glass beehive.
When locals and visitors wish to have picnics, they often head out to the banks of the Denmark River, where facilities for barbecues are provided. There are also areas for children to play in, while short walking trails allow outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy the beautiful surrounding and tranquil ambience. The Mokare Heritage Trail, in particular, is suitable for walking and bicycling under shades of numerous trees lining the river banks.
There are also several beaches that visitors head out to whenever they wish to indulge in sun, sand, and surf. The Lights Beach is suitable for swimming and fishing. The Ocean Beach, on the other hand, is ideal for surfing. There are also spots within the beach that are well suited for rock fishing. Ocean Beach is also located within walking distance to Wilson Head and Lions Lookout, where visitors can enjoy magnificent and breathtaking views of the coastline and forested areas.
When looking for an attraction that the whole family can enjoy, visitors should stop by the Denmark Dinosaur World. Located on Bandit Road, this bird and reptile center features the Dinosaur Skeletons exhibition. It also has several breeding programs for species of native birds. The center was established to promote conservation and information on birds and reptiles in Australia. Facilities for picnics and barbecues are provided.
Located nearby is the Valley of the Giants Treetop Walk, an attraction that draws visitors from all over the state. The lightweight bridge where visitors can walk on is situated 40 meters above the forest floor and allows them to enjoy spectacular views of the forest canopy. The area boasts of several impressive tingle trees, some more than several centuries old. This attraction is located several kilometers outside of Denmark and shouldn't be missed by its visitors.
Also situated a short drive away from Denmark is the William Bay National Park, which boasts of several impressive rock formations. Several nature trails lead visitors through the park, providing ample opportunities for animal viewing and bird watching. From August to October, the park becomes alive with the colors of wildflowers that blanket its grounds. The coastal parts of the park are also suitable for fishing. Also located within the park is the Green's Pool, a sheltered swimming hole that is ideal for snorkeling and scuba diving. A short distance away is another interesting attraction, the Elephant Rocks. These rounded boulders are so named because of their semblance to elephants.
For those looking to experience something unique and unforgettable, a visit to the Pentland Alpalca Stud and Tourist Farm would be in order. Located along Scotsdale Road within Denmark, this farm actually invites visitors to pet and feed their alpalcas, koalas, and other native and domesticated animals. It is also a popular destination for school tours and excursions.
