Cowaramup, South West
Cowaramup is a town located in the South West region of Western Australia. The place-name was derived from an Aboriginal word which mean `Purple-crown Lorikeet.'
The town is considered part of the Margaret River wine region and is home to several wineries. Along Bussel Highway is the Margaret River Regional Wine Centre, which provides information on the location and nature of each winery in the area. Maps are also provided to those unfamiliar with the region. The center also offers comparative wine tasting to allow visitors a taste of what they come looking for.
One of these wineries is Cullen Wines, located along Caves Road. This extensive winery is composed of a vineyard and restaurant, both focused on producing totally organic products. The grapes in their vineyard are grown using biodynamic techniques while the restaurant prepares their dishes only with organic produce bought locally.
Another winery that emphasizes on organic products is the Settlers Ridge Organic Wines, an award winning establishment that is composed of more than a hundred acres. Their vineyard uses only nature-based fertilizers and natural fungus control agents. The owners also pride themselves in using sustainable agricultural practices that maintain soil fertility for a long time. Perhaps the most compelling evidence they have of the superiority of their techniques lies in the fact that their products has garnered more than fifty medals in less than a decade of operation.
On the other hand, Palandri Wines prides itself on using state-of-the-art techniques to produce their wine products. The winery is an award winning tourist destination that offers more than just wine tasting to its visitors. Their production facility, for one, can process more than four thousand tones of fruit and its cellar doors are one of the largest in the area. Palandri uses tasting plates, in which wines are paired with food to enhance their quality and flavor. Their Cellar Door Cafe also features a computer games area to entertain any child who accompanies adult visitors. Their extensive grounds also include a volleyball court and cricket grounds, as well as a large picnic area.
The Vasse Felix Winery, located along Caves Road, holds the distinction of being the first winery to be established in the region. The winery consistently produces high quality wine products that are suitable not only for local consumption but also for export. The winery also incorporates a restaurant that offers delicious dishes to those who come for wine tasting. Its old building is also used as a venue for performing arts and showcases several artworks.
Apart from wineries, there are also several attractions that visitors in Cowaramup can enjoy. A short drive away from town will lead visitors to the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, which is ideal for bushwalking, animal viewing, bird watching, and rock climbing. The park also features several secluded and beautiful beaches that are ideal for swimming. There are also several walking trails that lead to lookouts and vantage points which allows visitors to view the spectacular coastline and verdant forested areas.
