Busselton, South West
Busselton is a coastal town located in the South West region of Western Australia. It faces Geographe Bay and is considered as one of the most progressive regions of the country.
The town is the location of the longest wooden jetty in the southern hemisphere, almost 2 kilometers in length. This structure is also considered as a historical landmark, as its construction began in 1841. The present time saw the jetty as the location of an underwater observatory with numerous underwater viewing windows and an interpretive centre.
Also located on the waterfront of the town is the Nautical Lady Entertainment World, a recreational complex that is popular among families and groups of friends. The complex comprises of an outdoor skating rink, bumper boats, trampolines, water slides, racing cars, and other amusement rides.
There are also several historical buildings in Busselton. One is the St. Mary's Church of England, which was built in 1845 and is reportedly the oldest church in the state. Located along the Vasse River on Queen Street, it is a structure made out of limestone and timber. Adjacent to the church is a graveyard that has been used since 1841.
Visitors should also be interested to stop by the Wonnerup House which was constructed in 1859 by one of the original settlers of the area. Across it is the Teacher's House, built in 1885, and the School, which was constructed in 1873.
On the corner of Adelaide and Queen Streets is the Weld Hall, built in 1881 and listed with State's Register of Heritage Places.
Another notable historical structure is the Old Courthouse, also located along Queen Street. The structure was built in 1856 and was converted into an arts centre in 1975. It now houses the Artgeo Cultural Complex, which exhibits contemporary art and showcases works of local artisans. The building is also registered with the State Heritage listing.
The Vasse River is a popular destination for those wishing to have picnics and barbecues. It is also where the Rotary Park Children's playground is located.
Busselton is also one of the areas that are ideal for whale watching during September to December. Visitors are advised to purchase a Land Based Whale Watching Kit which contains information on the best vantage points in town and on the behavior of these giant mammals.
There are also several annual events in Busselton that locals and visitors converge for. One is the Geographe Bay Race Week, held every March. This event is considered as the largest annual yachting regatta in the state and is accompanied by live entertainment, parties, and picnics.
Another event is the Quit Forest Rally, held every April in Busselton and Nannup. This automobile racing event is organized by the West Australian Car Club and is participated by several car manufacturing teams.
The Busselton foreshore is the location of the Ironman Western Australian Triathlon, which features a swimming event along the Busselton jetty. It is part of the world wide competitions of Ironman distance races and is one of the most anticipated events in town.
