Bunbury, South West
Bunbury is a city located within the South West region of Western Australia and is the state's third largest city. It is also a known port, located near the mouth of the Collie River. The city was named after Lieutenant Henry William St. Pierre Bunbury, an early explorer.
There are a lot of historic buildings located within the city. One of which is the Old Railway Station, located along Carmody Street. The station was built during the turn of the 20th century, to replace the old one that burned down. It now houses the Tourist Bureau, where visitors can obtain important information for exploring the city.
Another historic structure is the Leschenault Homestead, which started its construction in 1844 and was completed in the later part of the 19th century. However, the homestead is now privately owned, so visitors can only gaze at it from street level.
When visitors walk along the Stirling Street Historic Precinct, they get to view houses that were built in the later part of the 19th century. Along this historic street are cottages and opulent houses that lends a rich heritage to the city.
On the corner of Charterhouse Close and Flynn Road is the St. Mark's Anglican Church. It began providing service to the community in 1842 and is considered one of the oldest churches in the state. The church's graveyard contains some of the notable early settlers of Bunbury.
The King Cottage Museum, on the other hand, is not only a historical structure in itself, but also showcases items and memorabilia related to local history. Located along Forrest Avenue, the cottage was built in the late 19th century out of bricks made from local clay.
For a bit of the outdoors, locals and visitors head to the Anzac Park, where a War Memorial dedicated to the soldiers who served in World War I is located. Accessed via the corner of Parkfield and Stirling Streets, the park is ideal for strolling, jogging, and biking. There are also several excellent picnic spots, while a bird aviary provides additional interest and entertainment to visitors.
Visitors can also head out to the Big Swamp Wildlife Park, located along Prince Phillip Drive. The park is home to several species of birds and free ranging animals, allowing ample opportunities for visitors to familiarize themselves with some of them. The aviary allows visitors to feed some of the birds, while children can also make use of its playground. The park has facilities for picnics and barbecues, allowing families to spend one enjoyable day at its grounds.
Another ideal family destination is the Bunbury Dolphin Discovery Centre on Koombana Drive. The centre allows visitors to get close to these marine animals and interact with them. The center also features the Interpretive Museum and Theatre, where visitors can learn everything about dolphins that live in Koombana Bay.
Along Ocean Drive is the Lighthouse Lookout, another well-known landmark of the city. Visitors can enjoy the spectacular coastal scenery when they visit this attraction.
Another interesting attraction of Bunbury is the Mangrove Boardwalk, where visitors can view some of the oldest mangroves in the country, some believed to be more than 20,000 years old. The boardwalk is located on Koombana Drive.
