Bridgetown, South West
Bridgetown is a town located in the South West region of Western Australia, situated along the banks of the Blackwood River.
The river provides ideal setting for picnics and fishing, making it popular among locals and visitors. The Blackwood River Park is such a location, with several walking trails that allows everyone to enjoy scenic views and appreciate the serene, natural atmosphere. There is also a wooden bridge over it, considered to the longest of its kind in the state. The river is also ideal for boating and canoeing.
When stopping by the Bridgetown-Greenbushes Tourist Bureau, visitors should also look out for the numerous jigsaw puzzles that adorn its walls. The building also houses a small folk museum that focuses on local history. This establishment is located along Hampton Street and also provides information on scenic drives that visitors follow around town.
Across the tourist bureau is the Memorial Park, which has a playground and facilities for picnics. It is also features a replica of the ship `Bridgetown,' from which the name of the town was derived. There is also a War Memorial that adds an interesting appeal to the park ground.
Bridgetown boasts of several historic buildings and structures within its limits. Its most popular attraction is the Bridgedale house, also located along Hampton Street. It is also considered as the oldest structure in town, having been constructed in 1862. The house and its surrounding garden are now maintained by National Trust.
St. Pauls Anglican Church, located on the corner of Phillips Street, is another historic structure in Bridgetown that is worth a visit. It was constructed in 1911.
Another interesting attraction is the Donnelly Well located along the South Western Highway. It is one of the wells used during the later part of the 19th century for the mail run.
Woodworking enthusiasts would do well to stop by the Bohemian Woodcraft studio where chair-making demonstrations are offered. Located along Hampton Street, all the woodworks featured and sold in this establishment are made by craftsman Matthew Ingram. Ingram also designs and creates wooden furniture according to client's specifications.
Visitors get to enjoy bush walking and animal viewing at the Bridgetown Jarrah Park. Located a short distance away from the town, this outdoor destination has two walking trails that alludes to the timber history of the area. The Shield Tree Trail takes just 20 minutes to complete while the Tree Fallers Trail lasts for about an hour. Both afford beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.
Within the town is the Suttons Lookout, accessed via Phillips Street, which also offers visitors beautiful scenery of the town and the Blackwood River.
Situated at the corner of Donnelly Mill and Sear Roads is the Donnelly Timber Mill Museum. This establishment offers tours inside the mill itself, to allow visitors to inspect its century-old interiors. The museum itself is yet another attraction dedicated to the area's timber industry.
Every November, the town celebrates the Blues at Bridgetown Music Festival, an annual event held every November and is attended by visitors far and wide.
