
Covering an area of about 500,000 square kilometers in north west of Western Australia, the Pilbara region is home to around 40,000 people. Some fantastic rocky landscapes and mining sites dot Pilbara region. Most of the life in Pilbara revolves around the town of Karratha, meaning ‘Good Country’. The town is rich in natural resources like iron, natural gas and salt. Interestingly, the annual festival Fe-NaCI-NG Festival is named after the chemical abbreviations of these resources. Karratha also has the biggest shopping center of the region called ‘Centro Karratha’. The coast in the region is famous for various aquatic adventures, like swimming and fishing. The nearby Jaburara Heritage Trail offers some great insight into the Aboriginal lives with cave paintings and carvings.
Pilbara is also home to some world class National Parks and Marine Parks. Ningaloo Marine Park is particularly renowned for its rich marine life. You could relish the sight of some fantastic coral formations, rare starfish, Dugongs, Whale Sharks, Dolphins and giant Hump- Backed Whales. The Park also has some historic shipwreck sites.
Karijini National Park is famous for its spectacular mountains, gorges, watercourses and plateaus, and is second largest in the State next only to Rudall River National Park. The Cape Range National Park is an alluring sight known for rugged limestone ranges, deep canyons and 50 kilometers of pristine beaches. Millstream-Chichester National Park is famous for some swimming conditions and informal camping areas.
Some of the other places worth visiting in this region include Chichester Range Camel Trail, Dampier Archipelago, Burrup Peninsula, Naval Communication Station ‘Harold E. Holt’, Mackerel Islands, Pilbara Railways Historical Society Museum, Mt. Nameless, and St. Matthews Church.
