West Perth, Perth and Surrounds
West Perth is a suburb in Perth, Western Australia, located right beside its central business district. It is composed of residential and commercial spaces and is quite accessible to all types of amenities this city has to offer. It is bordered by North Perth, Subiaco and Leederville in the west, the Perth Central Business District in the east, and Kings Park in the south.
Along Harvest Terrace is the Parliamentary House, where the state's legislative bodies convene. This historic building started its construction in 1902, with several additions in the years after.
Another notable structure is the nearby Dumas House, a substantial office building constructed in 1965 with the intention of providing a centralized location for all department offices in the state.
Opposite the Parliament House is the Solidarity Park, which started out as venue for a workers protest against legislation of the Court Governments. It is now one of the popular outdoor destinations in the suburb, where visitors can take strolls and go jogging in.
However, most locals and visitors of West Perth head out to the Kings Park when they wish to enjoy the outdoors to the fullest. Among other things, the park features the Edith Dircksey Cowan Memorial. This memorial was made in honor of the first female member of any Australian parliament. The park also features extensive grounds for bushwalking, bird watching, and animal viewing. There are also numerous sites for picnics and barbecues. Nature walks lead visitors to several vantage points where views of the city and the river may be enjoyed.
Across the railway line is Scitech, an interactive science museum that is the ideal destination for families. Majority of its exhibits are hands-on that will surely delight all its visitors, be they children or adults. There are several science shows held all throughout the year to inform and entertain guests. It also has a puppet theater designed for younger kids, as well as several amazing exhibits. The establishment also serves as a venue for different special events such as birthday parties and corporate conferences.
Adjacent to Scitech is Horizon - the Planetarium. This establishment features a large projection dome screen that accurately depicts the position of numerous heavenly bodies. It is also one of the more popular educational destinations in the city, with its multi-media presentations designed as much as to entertain and to inform. It also provides details on the latest advancement in astronomy and exploration of space.
For those wishing to indulge in a bit of shopping, there's the Harbour Town Shopping Centre located on Welllington Street.
A short drive to the central business district will lead visitors to a number of retail and commercial establishments. However, Perth CBD is also the home of several heritage structures, such as the historic Swan Bells along Riverside Drive and the Government House. Another interesting attraction is the Perth Mint, located on Hay Street and is considered as the oldest operational mint in the country.
Located north of West Perth is the Lake Monger, where people head out to when they want to indulge in water-based recreation such as boating and canoeing. The lake is surrounded by the Lake Monger Reserve, where a lot of animals call home. This wetland is also excellent setting for bird watching.
