Toodyay, Perth and Surrounds
Toodyay is a charming town located north east of Perth, Western Australia. It is situated within the Avon Valley, along the Avon River. Because of its rich heritage and history, the whole town has the distinction of being classified by the National Trust.
Along Piesse Street is the Connor's Mill Museum, originally constructed as a flour mill in 1870 and is lovingly preserved by local authorities. The museum features the original machinery used, along with its steam engine. The establishment also details the life of Moondyne Joe, a famous bushranger in the late 19th century.
Another historic structure within Toodyay is the Old Gaol Museum, located along Clinton Street. The building was constructed in 1865 and has served several functions all throughout its existence, as prison, local police station, private residence, and finally, a folk museum. It now showcases items and memorabilia related to local history.
Visitors should also take the time to stop by the St. Stephen's Church of England, which was built in 1862. This religious structure still retains its wooden bell tower and original pews that were made by convicts. An equally historic structure is the Uniting Church, located on Duke Street. This church was originally constructed as a school in 1887, in architectural style known as Ecclesiastical Gothic.
Other historic structures to watch out for are the Old Victoria Hotel which was built in 1899 along the main street, and the Freemason's Hotel, constructed in 1861.
For those wishing to enjoy the outdoors without having to wander outside Toodyay, there's the Newcastle Park located along Stirling Terrace. The park features a monument to Charlotte Davies, the first female to arrive in the Swan River colony.
Afterwards, visitors can stop by the nearby Coca Cola Cafe and Museum, where everything associated with the soft drink brand are showcased. The establishment also offers local dishes and the famous New Zealand Ice Cream.
A short drive from Toodyay will bring visitors to the Avon Valley National Park, where visitors can follow nature walks to reach lookouts that afford visitors spectacular views of the Avon Valley and the Avon River. Among the popular activities the park offers are bushwalking and canoeing.
One attraction that is designed for the enjoyment of the whole family is the Boshack Outback Wilderness Farm Oasis.
