Swan Valley, Perth and Surrounds

Swan Valley

Photo Gallery Photo Gallery

Swan Valley is a region located in Western Australia, situated along the Swan River. It is a part of the state that is known for its fertile soil and numerous vineyards and wineries. Because of its proximity to the city of Perth, a lot of city dwellers come to the region for day visits and extended vacations.

The wineries in the area open their cellar doors to allow guests to sample their products. Some also have picnic facilities that cater to visitors who wish to enjoy the countryside with good food and fine wine.

Those interested in purchasing items made by the Aboriginal people should head out to the Maalinup Aboriginal Gallery on West Swan Road in Henley Brook. Among the items available for sale are soaps, glassworks, ceramics, and woodworks.

There are several historic buildings and structures located within Swan Valley, particularly in the town of Guildford. Along Meadow Street is Du Cane's House, a residential structure built in 1852. It was part of the Convict Depot and still stands intact until the present. Located along James Street is the East Guildford Cemetery, a historic landmark bearing a memorial to explorer Andrew Stirling. On the corner of Swan and Meadow Streets is the Guildford Courthouse that was built in the later part of 19th century and the much older Gaol, which was constructed during the early part of the same century. The Crosslands House on Swan Street was built in 1897 and symbolized the wealth brought on by gold mining during that time. Other structures of note are the Guildford Grammar School Campus and the Chapel of St. Mary and St. George, which was constructed in Gothic architectural style. Another educational institution, the Guildford Primary School, holds the distinction of being the oldest school in the state and this is much evident in the appearance of the building, untouched since its construction in 1868. It is situated along Helena Street.

In Midland, visitors get to behold its Town Hall, located along the Great Eastern Highway. This French Renaissance structure was constructed in 1906 and still serves its functions.

The St. Mary's Church is one of the oldest religious structures in Swan Valley and in Western Australia. Construction for this church, located on Queen Street in Busselton, started in 1844.

There are several attractions in Swan Valley that cater to the whole family. One of the more popular is The Maze, located in Bullsbrook. Apart from the timber maze, the attraction also highlights its mini-golf facilities and resident animals.

The extensive Whiteman Park along Lord Street provides ample opportunities for its visitors to enjoy the outdoors, allowing them to indulge in bush walking, bird watching, and animal viewing. The park also features the Caversham Wildlife Park and Zoo, which has established excellent breeding programs for several endangered species native to Australia. The zoo also allows the feeding of some its animals during designated hours. Also located within the park is the Western Australian Birds of Prey Centre, which aims to educate its visitors on the conservation of these kinds of birds.

After a day of exploring the outdoors, visitors of Swan Valley should head out to Malaga and try the Xtreme Leisure Indoor Paintball facility on Victoria Road. Paintball is one activity that the whole family can participate in and spend hours of fun doing.
