South Perth, Perth and Surrounds
South Perth is a suburb located south of the Perth Central Business District in Western Australia. It is also located on the southern banks of the Swan River, and is mainly a residential suburb. It is bordered by the river in the north and west, by Kensington in the east, and Como in the south.
Its main attraction is the Perth Zoo, along Laboucher Road. Open daily, it offers visitors glimpses of numerous native Australian animals, including some rare species. Its famous exhibits include the `World of Birds' and the `Nocturnal House.' It also has a botanical garden that cultivates numerous native plant species.
Another popular attraction is the Old Mill, located in Mill Point. This historical landmark has been restored by the National Trust to its original condition when it was built in the early part of the 19th century. Visitors will also find several memorabilia related to the pioneering days housed within this remarkable structure.
There are also several outdoor destinations located within South Perth. In fact, the whole foreshore facing the Swan River is a popular site for picnics, barbecues, and family get-togethers. The Sir James Mitchell Park, in particular, has several paths suitable for biking and walking.
On Hurlingham Road is the Liberty Swing, which features a playground for children of all ages. Locals and visitors also head out to Richardson Park along Amherst Street to enjoy the expansive outdoor grounds without having to leave the suburb and the city. It is also home to the South Perth Cricket Club.
There are also cruises offered to take visitors up and down the Swan River that allow them to enjoy scenic sights and views. Sailing enthusiasts also call the river their playground, while boats can also be hired for those wishing to indulge in boat fishing.
Across the Narrows Bridge, visitors can also stop by the Kings Park, an extensive outdoor attraction that allows them to go bush walking if they want to without having to leave the heart of Perth. The park also features a botanical garden and is an ideal setting for strolling, jogging, and biking. It also contains the State War Memorial within its grounds.
Visitors can also head out to the Perth Central Business District, where a lot of retail and entertainment establishments are located.
Taking a stroll through the East Perth Cemeteries will also provide for an unusual and unique experience. This historical landmark is actually composed of several gravesites and has been used by the city since its establishment in 1830. It now serves as a silent reminder of the years gone by.
Also located nearby is the Perth Mint, which is recognized as the oldest operating mint in the country. Located along Hay Street, the mint was established in 1899 and still offers demonstrations to visitors on gold pouring.
A short drive to Salter Point will bring visitors to the Mount Henry Peninsula, which is also a woodland reserve. It is ideal for bird watching and animal viewing.
