Scarborough, Perth and Surrounds
Scarborough is a beachside suburb located in the western part of Perth in Western Australia. It is administered by the local government area of the City of Stirling. The town was named after the beachside resort of Scarborough in England.
It is composed largely of residential areas, with large, opulent houses standing alongside smaller, cozier ones. The suburb is bordered by Doubleview in the east, City Beach in the south, and Tigg in the north.
It was said that about a quarter of Scarborough's population came from overseas, making this suburb a veritable melting pot of culture and heritage.
The suburb's most popular attraction is the Scarborough Beach, where a lot of holiday makers head out to enjoy the white sand, surf, and refreshing sea breeze. Scarborough enjoys sunny weather all year round and is located 15 minutes away from the heart of Perth. The beach is a popular destination for swimming, beach fishing, and surfing.
Near the beach are several playgrounds that children can use to amuse themselves while adults take advantage of barbecue and picnic facilities offered to the public.
There are also numerous restaurants and cafes lining the foreshore of Scarborough, offering visitors and locals with delicious meals and refreshing drinks. Patrons can choose from numerous range of cuisines offered, from fine dining to casual eating establishments. At night, the nightclubs and bars open their doors and enliven Scarborough's night scene. There is no shortage of things to do in this part of Perth, be it night or day. Weekend markets are also held in Scarborough, where good bargains are always expected to be had.
For those who are intent on doing some shopping, there's the Observation City precinct, where there several retail stores are located.
There are also several parks located within Scarborough, providing its residents and visitors with ready destinations for outdoor recreation. Most of these public spaces are used for jogging, strolling, and biking.
The suburb is also home to the Scarborough Cricket Club, whose expansive grounds provide venue for several cricket matches since its establishment in 1946.
A known sporting destination in Scarborough is the Abbett Park, which features facilities for football, squash, tennis, cricket, and lawn bowls.
There are also several interesting attractions located near Scarborough that visitors can head out to. One is the Rottnest Island, located several kilometers off the coast. There is a regular ferry service leaving Perth to this island, which boasts of white sand beaches and crystal blue waters. Apart from swimming, the island is also ideal for snorkeling, scuba diving, and fishing. There is also a small golfing facility for golf enthusiasts. The whole island is also a wildlife reserve, where a lot of unique animals call home. Rottnest Island is home of the rare `Quokka,' a kind of small marsupial.
Approximately 10 minutes away from the suburb is the Hillary's Marina, where the AQUA Underwater World is located. This facility keeps numerous marine creatures that are displayed in its submarine tunnel. The marina is also home to several bottled nose dolphins.
