Rockingham, Perth and Surrounds
Rockingham is a suburb of Perth, located at the shores of Mangles Bay in Western Australia. It is a popular tourist destination of the area, having plenty of natural and man-made attractions to offer.
Though not suitable for swimming or fishing, Lake Richmond is still a popular attraction in Rockingham. This freshwater lake is home to a number of water birds and other animals. It is located along Lake Street and is also a well-known habitat of thrombolites. Visitors, however, are cautioned to stay on the boardwalk, as the lake also supports a population of tiger snakes.
Another popular attraction is the Garden Island, albeit accessible only for day trips. The island is the location of the first European settlement in the state, though is presently occupied by the HMAS Stirling Naval Base. Its beautiful beaches are ideal settings for picnics, fishing, sailing, and fishing. It is also home to a species of wallaby known as the Tammar.
On Rockingham, most of the picnics and barbecues are done at its foreshore. Churchill and Bell Parks both have facilities for these activities, as well as children's playgrounds.
Visitors can also take the ferry to Penguin Island where a colony of fairy penguins can be seen during the months of March to December.
Adjacent to Rockingham is Point Peron, where limestone cliffs afford spectacular views of the coastline. The area is also a well-known destination for those wishing to go fishing, snorkeling, and scuba diving. There are also several rock pools that visitors can explore and swim in during low tides.
There are also several attractions that are geared for the enjoyment of the whole family. Such is the Rockingham Water Sports on Wanliss Street. This attraction is quite popular, especially during the hot summer months. The water rides within the facility are designed not just for enjoyment but also for the safety of each family member. The facility also holds corporate and other especial events.
A similar establishment is the Bonney's Waterski Park on St. Albans Road. This waterskiing complex will surely provide hours of fun and excitement to its visitors. There are also facilities for picnics and barbecues available within the premises.
Every Sunday, the whole Rockingham comes alive with bargain hunting at the Swap Market. Held at the parking area behind Rockingham Beach, this event is frequented by those wishing to buy and sell some second hand products and craft items.
Handcrafted items can also be bought at the Rockingham Art Gallery & Craft Centre at the Civic Centre on Civic Boulevard. Most of the items sold here are made by local artisans and craftsmen.
Rockingham also boasts of two museums. One is the Rockingham Historical Society & Museum on the corner of Flinders Lane and Kent Street. This establishment showcases items related to local history and also displays several period costumes. On the other hand, the Granary Museum on Rockingham Road focuses only on items and artifacts related to the grain industry of the area and of the whole Western Australia. Visitors will also enjoy viewing its reconstructed scenes of rural life and community.
