North West, Western Australia

The North West region of Western Australia is a large wilderness area that is a beautiful mix of bush land, rivers, gorges, and mountains.

This historic cemetery contains the graves of Aghan camel drivers that provide the first freight service in the area.

One interesting feature of the Old Derby Gaol is that it was constructed entirely out of galvanized iron and bars. Located along Loch Street, this structure was built in 1906 and functioned mainly as prison for Aboriginal inmates. The gaol is registered with the National and State Heritage.

Also located in Derby are the Botanical Gardens that contain many species of exotic plants. An adjacent building houses Aboriginal artifacts and artworks by local artists.

Another historic structure is the Roebourne Court House, which recently undergone restoration and still performs its original court functions. When there are no court sessions, visitors are free to inspect this century-old structure located on Hampton Street.

Taking four-wheel vehicles will allow visitors access to the Punda Art Site, where there are a number of Aboriginal rock carvings. There is also a shady rock hole that is considered a good swimming spot. There are several fishing spots in the area and numerous bird life.

In the 3 Mile Valley near Wyndham is the Trial Tree, located within the Bastion Range. The tree is considered sacred to the Aborigines in the area, used for a ritual relating to seeking the one responsible a death of a tribe member from an unnatural cause.

Also located near Wyndham is the Alligator Hole where several saltwater crocodiles can be found. This attraction is along Perry Creek.

Another interesting destination is the Cape Keraudren Nature Reserve, accessed via the Great Northern Highway in Port Hedland. This attraction is known for having white sandy beach that is excellent for swimming, fishing, and camping. There are also plenty of opportunities for fossicking for shells and collecting mud crabs.

For serious outdoor enthusiasts, a visit to the Karijini National Park is definitely worth doing. The park boasts of rock pools, gorges, waterfalls, and breathtaking views that provide an enjoyable experience for any visitor. Picnics and camping are also allowed in designated areas. This national park is home to plenty of plants and animals, including numerous bird species. Of special interest are the numerous mounds of pebblemound mice all throughout the park. Visitors can also hike up to the summit of Mount Bruce, the second highest peak of the state.

Those seeking to spend some tranquil moments should stop by tidal flats in Port Hedland. Avid fishermen also flock to these areas to indulge in their favorite pastime. A visit to the Port Hedland Visitor Centre will provide important information on tide times and when the tidal flats are accessible to guests.

One huge event in the North West region is the Kimberley Writers Festival, an annual event celebrating the artistic and musical scene of the area. The festival is organized by the Kununurra Community Library and is held on Mangaloo Street. Authors and musicians from all over the state converge to Kununurra every June to celebrate their common interests and passions.

There is no shortage of North West accommodation options to choose from in a selection of towns, depending on what visitors are looking for which includes Broome, Kununurra, Port Hedland, Karratha and Cable Beach.
