Kalbarri
Kalbarri is a coastal town located in the Coral Coast region of Western Australia and is a famous tourist destination in the state.
The town is a good gateway to the Kalbarri National Park, considered as one of the top national parks in the country. The park boasts of its own cover of colorful wildflowers during August and October, as well as variety of land formations such as sandstone cliffs and lookouts that afford spectacular views of the bush land, the Murchison River, and the coastline. Located within the park is the Eagle Gorge, so called for the birds that are seen soaring over this area. The Hawks Head Lookout provides visitors with spectacular sceneries of gorges and is also an ideal picnic site. The park also features the Island Rock and Natural Bridge rock formations that have attracted visitors far and wide, as well as the Red Bluff coastal cliffs that offer excellent vantage points for whale watching.
The Murchison River that meanders through the national park is the second longest in Western Australia. It runs through the Tumblagooda Sandstone gorge that is abundant with trace fossils. Numerous visitors drop by this landform to view these remnants of prehistoric life in the planet. Walking along the riverbanks allows visitors to view the numerous species of birds calling the area home. There are also opportunities for canoeing and river cruises.
The town also boasts of several attractions designed for the whole family. An example of which is the Kalbarri Oceanarium located within the Kalbarri Marine Center. This attraction has several aquariums that mimic natural marine habitats and keep a wide variety of marine creatures. Among the animals showcased are multitudes of fishes, deep sea crabs, giant crayfishes, anemones, sponges, seahorses, and a lot more.
Also ideal for the whole family is the Kalbarri Wildflower Centre, located along Clotworthy Street. The center offers a walking trail in a bush land replete with all kinds of wildflowers. Some of these walks are lead by botanists which provide information on the surrounding flora. After the walk, visitors can gather in a picnic area to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The center itself offers souvenirs for sale and also maintains a herbarium.
Kalbarri is also home to the Rainbow Jungle Parrot Breeding Centre that specialises in preserving several endangered species of exotic birds, particularly parrots. Located along Red Bluff Road, the center also features waterfalls, palms, and beautiful gardens.
Also located along Red Bluff Road is the Seahorse Sanctuary, an establishment dedicated to conserving the population of wild seahorses around the world. This breeding facility allows self-guided tours for those interested to know about culturing these unique marine creatures.
Located near Kalbarri is the Wittecarra Creek, which features a cairn at its mouth that bears inscription indicating that the site is where the first permanent landing of white settlers occurred in the country. This was made by two castaways of the ship Batavia, the same vessel that sank in Morning Reef.
The town comes alive every June for the annual Kalbarri Canoe and Cray Carnival, held at the Murchison River foreshore along Grey Street. Apart from several canoeing events, the carnival also features several sources of entertainment for the whole community.
To experience all Kalbarri has to offer, there are numerous Kalbarri accommodation options to choose including retreats, apartments and homesteads.
