Richmond, Melbourne — Victoria

Richmond is a suburb located in the inner part of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia. It is named after Richmond Hill in London.

The suburb is composed mainly of residential areas mixed with commercial spaces. It is home to several factory outlets of textile companies.

The suburb boasts of a rich heritage, apparent in several of its historic buildings. An example would be the Richmond Town Hall, located along Bridge Road and constructed in Venetian Gothic style of architecture. The original parts of the structure were constructed in the later part of the 19th century. It underwent refurbishment in 1991.

On the banks of the Yarra River is the Richmond Power Station, a coal fired station built in 1891 and was closed in 1976. This state heritage building now houses the headquarters of the Country Road clothing company and is now located in the area known are Cremorne.

The Yarra River borders the eastern part of the suburb and is an excellent outdoor destination. The trees lining the river provide ample shade for picnics and strolling along the banks of the river.

There are also several historic residences in Richmond that add to the aesthetic appeal of the suburb. The terrace homes along James Street are classified by the National Trust and were built in 1857. On Church Street is the Lalor House, which was built in Mannerist style and is one of the significant landmarks of the area.

Situated on the corner of Swan and Stewart Streets is another iconic landmark in Richmond. The Corner Hotel was originally a pub in the early 19th century and was converted into a live music venue a century later. Currently, it also hosts rock music performances.

Another interesting attraction of Richmond is the St. Ignatius’ Church, located along Church Street. This Gothic Revival style building was built in the later part of the 19th century and is one of the largest churches in the area.

The suburb is home to a substantial Vietnamese community and nowhere is their presence more felt that along Victoria Street, where several Vietnamese restaurants and groceries are located. Consequently, this has earned the moniker ‘Little Saigon’ for the street. Any visitor to Richmond will surely enjoy strolling along this street and be fascinated with the neighborhood’s unique ambience and culture.

On the corner of Victoria and Burnley Streets is the Victoria Gardens, a major shopping destination in Richmond. Opened just in 2003, it is located on a former industrial site.

Richmond is also where the Dimneys discount store is located. This retail establishment has been a part of the community since 1853 and is situated along Swan Street.

When the residents of Richmond wish to indulge in sporting activities, they often head out to the Yarra Park, located on the western edge of the suburb. The park features several sporting facilities, including the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The MCG features several sculpture of prominent Australian sportsmen. The Punt Road Oval is the headquarters of the Richmond Football Club.
