Elwood is a suburb of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia. It is located facing the Port Phillip and is between the suburbs of St. Kilda and Brighton.
The area used to be inhabitable, being once a swampland. With the construction of the Elwood Canal, the ground dried up and buildings were constructed, leading to the establishment of a settlement that grew into what it is now, a pleasant bayside destination for those visiting the city of Melbourne. It is also one of the most sought-after addresses in the city.
Its most popular attraction is the Elwood Beach, the strip of sand fronting the suburb that becomes crowded during the summer season. One addition to the appeal of this beach is the fact that it is a clothing optional beach, making it an ideal location for getting the perfect tan. It is also an excellent setting for swimming and sailing, being well patrolled during most times of the year. The beach is also the starting point of the Bayside Trail, a path used by bikers and skaters in the area. During several times of the year, the beach also hosts several triathlon events.
The water of Port Phillip is also popular for boating. The nearest boat marina is located in the nearby St. Kilda. The sheltered St. Kilda Pier is also another popular destination for visitors who wish to hire boats.
Visitors and locals often converged to the Elwood Village, which is located along Ormond Esplanade and is the location of several restaurants and cafes that offer delicious meals and refreshing treats.
Point Ormond Reserve is located on the northern part of the Elwood Beach and is situated on an elevated headland. It is possible to view the scenic cityscapes from the highest vantage point of this reserve. The beauty of the coastline is also clearly visible when one takes pleasant nature walks around the reserve. There are also numerous shady spots for picnics and barbecues.
A short distance south is the Elwood Park, which is ideal for strolling, jogging, and picnics. There are also several sporting ovals that are open for public use.
Another excellent outdoor destination for some residents in Elwood is the Elsternwick Park, along St. Kilda Street. The park also features a sporting oval as well as a man made lake. The walking paths around the park are ideal for short distance jogging and walking. The park also features a skating facility and a public golf course where locals and visitors can indulge in a pleasant game in an urban setting.
Elwood is a good starting point for visitors to explore the rest of the suburbs of Melbourne. Located in the nearby Ripponlea is the historic Rippon Lea House and garden. This Romanesque style estate is situated along Hotham Street and was constructed in 1868. The National Trust property includes a well-maintained Victorian garden complete with a conservatory, a lake, orchard, and a fernery. The garden is open to the public for spending some quiet time with friends and family.
