Dandenong is a suburb of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia. It is also situated along the Dandenong Creek and is a known manufacturing center of the area. The place-name was derived from an Aboriginal word which means ‘high mountain,’ in reference to the nearby Dandenong.
The suburb used to be an independent city that got incorporated into Melbourne. One of its most beautiful and historic landmark is the former town hall. This structure, prominently located on the corner of Lonsdale, Walker, and Langhorne Streets, was constructed in 1890 and has a clock tower and its grand mansard roof as its most striking features. This building recently underwent renovation and conversion into a performing arts center. Adjacent to the former town hall is the newly constructed Drum Theatre, easily identifiable with its red exteriors.
Visitors should also take the time to explore the Heritage Hill Social History Museum, which features several historic buildings that stood witness to the social history of Dandenong. Along the Langhorne Street are the Benga Oral Histroy Centre, the Saint James Church, and the Laurel Lodge. These buildings are set within landscaped gardens that visitors can explore at leisure and have picnics in. The attraction is also a popular venue for weddings and corporate events.
Art lovers should head out to the Walker Street Gallery, which showcases several collections of artworks. It is open to the public free of charge and aims to promote the local art scene as well as increase awareness on the works of international artists. The gallery hosts several art exhibitions throughout the year.
Next to the gallery is the Dandenong Community Arts Centre, a known venue for performing arts.
One accessible outdoor destination within the suburb is the Dandenong Park, located along the banks of the creek. Trees provide ample shade for picnics and barbecues, while short walking trails provides opportunities for exploring the areas around the creek.
Located north east of the suburb is the Dandenong Police Paddocks Reserve, a significant outdoor attraction composed of bushland, sporting areas, walking trails, and bicycle paths. There are also several designated picnic areas for locals and visitors to enjoy. The reserve is also ideal for bird watching.
Following the eastern end of the Brady Road, visitors will come upon the Churchill National Park, which features several walking paths for visitors to explore. The park is also excellent for jogging and bicycling. A dam built on the northern part of the park is ideal for bird watching. Facilities for picnics are also provided. In the southern part of the park, there’s the Churchill Park Golf Club. This golf course provides avid golfers with beautiful settings as they get to indulge in their favorite pastime, with the bush land and forested areas as backdrops.
The Dandenong Plaza is the suburb’s main shopping complex, which also features several restaurants and cafes. However, those looking for a bargain often head out to the Dandenong Market. Located at the corner of Cleveland and Clow Street, the market retails a large variety of items, including clothing, fabrics, fresh produce, nuts, and grocery goods. It is open every Tuesday, Friday, and Satuday.
