Peterborough, Great Ocean Road
Peterborough is a very small town in the Great Ocean Road, in between the Port Campbell National Park on its east and the Bay of Islands Coastal Park on its west. It is a tranquil place encircled by several untouched beautiful sandy beaches and just a short distance away from a number of tourists attractions extending from its town.
The Bay of Islands Coastal Park is a one-stop destination for tourists. Several popular tourist spots could be found here. Visitors would have the chance to view amazing sights when they come to this multipurpose park. This place even encourages the protection of various endangered and rare plant species.
This park begins with The Wild Dog Cove in its eastern section. It has an isolated small beach with extraordinary pools of rocks and a safe paddling area for visitors to enjoy. Other smaller bays include Worm Bay, Crofts Bay and Boat Bay.
It is connected by the Bay of Martyrs, a place which visitors would have a great sympathy for once they learned that it has a deep and painful history for the locals of Peterborough. Also known for such names like Halladale Point, Massacre Point, Massacre Bay, this desolate place is thought to be the area where a large number of Kirrae-Wurrong Aboriginal men were killed by Europeans. It is also strongly believed that these men were driven off the cliff to die. Other groups of women and children were massacred in its nearby swamp, thus making this bay a very significant place for the locals. Although it has a dreadful past, travelers nowadays would appreciate the amazing views of its towering rock stacks, arches, offshore inlets, gorges, and other coastal sites on top of the cliff.
Travelers who would want to experience island-hopping could visit the Bay of Islands. As its name implies, it is truly a bay with a group of small, unique offshore inlets. Visitors could look at the nesting sites provided for the silver gulls and the rare black-faced cormorant when they drop by on these tiny islands.
At the western section of the park, tourists could visit the Childers Cove. It is also a melancholy place for it is where the ship named Children was wrecked in 1839. However, today, it is an ideal place for tourists to have a picnic and view panoramic sceneries.
Peterborough offers a lot of museums for tourists to go to. Among them is the Steamtown Peterborough Museum. This is actually is an old railway, which showcases steam and diesel engines and a number of the town’s passenger carriages.
