
Metung is a town located within the East Gippsland region of Victoria in Australia. It is situated on a peninsula on the Gippsland Lakes and is a popular destination for those who wish to experience holidays away from crowded resorts.
The town boasts of spectacular views along the Bancroft Bay. Visitors can also explore its marina, where there is a boardwalk meant for leisurely strolls and enjoyment of fresh ocean breeze. This boardwalk starts right at the center of town and extends all the way to Chinaman’s Creek. Along the boardwalk is the Legend Rock, a protected landmark associated with an Aboriginal legend concerning greed.

Along Kings Cove Boulevard is the Kings Cove Metung Golf Course, which allows golfing enthusiasts to indulge in their favorite pastime in a superbly scenic setting. It was designed by famous course architect Ted Parslow.
One of the town’s main outdoor destinations is the Gippsland Lakes, where a lot of boats and canoes may be hired for a day of fishing or just lazily drifting along these calm waterways. The well stocked lakes ensures no fisherman comes away empty handed. The shady areas around the lakes are ideal for picnics and barbecues. Numerous animals that live around the lakes also come to the edges of the waterways to drink and cool off, providing opportunities for animal viewing. The marshes and swampy areas are replete with water fowls which makes bird watching easy and enjoyable. Several tour operators also offer cruises up and down these waterways for visitors to appreciate the beauty that is truly unique to the Gippsland Lakes.
Metung is part of the Bataluk Cultural Trail, which starts from Sale and ends at Cape Conran. This trail emphasizes on the culture of the Koorie Aboriginal people and leads to different sacred sites, Aboriginal Keeping Places, and locations of archaeological importance.
There are also several walking tracks around Metung that allows visitors to explore the surrounding bush land to their heart’s content. The nearby Boxers Creek is an example of an area filled with all that nature has to offer, a lovely waterway with crystal clear water, abundant animals and bird life, and pure, clean country air. Visitors can also wander around the Colquhoun National Park or go to Nyerimiland, a mere 10 kilometers away and featuring scenic picnic grounds with facilities for barbecues.
For the culturally minded, Metung has two art galleries well worth visiting. One is the Daniel Jenkins Studio, which specializes in outdoor artworks. The gallery showcases wind vanes and sculptures, all of them with whimsical and fanciful themes that will surely be cherished and treasured additions to any garden. On the other hand, the Max Nicholson Studio displays and retails fine artworks such as oil and watercolor paintings.
