Mount Dandenong, Dandenong Ranges — Victoria

Mount Dandenong is a suburb of Melbourne in Victoria. It is named after the mountain upon which the suburb lies. It is also located north of Olinda and south of Kalorama. The suburb is a popular destination for big city dwellers seeking to enjoy some peace and tranquility.

Mount Dandenong has several nature walks that lead visitors to scenic bush land. Being a part of the Danderong Ranges National Park, there are numerous animals and birds that live within the forested areas located just beyond the center of the suburb.

When in the area, visitors must make sure to stop by the Mount Dandenong Observatory, which takes advantage of its location as the highest point in the area. The observatory also has a restaurant and a café that allows diners spectacular views of the surrounding forests and countryside while enjoying delicious meals. The observatory is also set amidst a landscaped, English garden that provides a relaxing ambience for strolling. Highlights of the garden include the Australiana Tree, the Percy Possums House, a maze, a Wishing Tree, and the Arthur Streaton Monument.

Visitors can also visit the Mount Danderong Arboretum, which is located along the Ridge Road and is just walking distance from the observatory. The arboretum is an ideal setting for taking leisurely walks and enjoying the fresh mountain air. The mature trees in the area provide ample shade, allowing walks even during midday such relaxing experiences. There are also numerous spots ideal for picnics with families and groups of friends, with great mountain views as backdrops.

For those seeking to experience something unique and interesting, a visit to the William Ricketts Sanctuary, along the Mount Danderong Tourist Road, is in order. What makes this sanctuary special in the presence of a number of clay sculptures made by Ricketts scattered all over the area. These sculptures are inspired from mystical creatures and add a certain whimsy to the sanctuary. Visitors should be extra watchful when strolling along the paths, as some sculptures are discretely positioned and may take a bit of effort to spot. There is also an audio visual display on the artist and his works. The sanctuary also has heritage value, being established in the 1930s.

Mount Danderong is also an excellent gateway for exploring the rest of the area. Visitors can take the Puffing Billy train ride which runs from Belgrave to Gembrook and back. This steam train has been lovingly restored and maintained by volunteers and is now instrumental in making visitors appreciate the beauty of the Danderong Ranges. The town of Gembrook also has several attractions to offer, such as quaint shops and a park located right on the edge of Emerald Lake.
Another good destination for visitors in Mount Danderong to explore is the town of Olinda. A short drive south will bring visitors to the National Rhododendron Gardens where visitors will get to enjoy a profusion of colorful flowers all year through. After exploring the town’s shops, a visit to the Cuckoo Bavarian restaurant will not only yield good meals but also performances of traditional German folk music.
