Richmond, South Coast
Richmond
Richmond is a little town located in Tasmania’s South Coast. It has a population of roughly 880 people and is a great site to discover the rich heritage of the state. It was proclaimed a town back in 1824 by Lieutenant Governor Sorell.
Travelers would take pleasure in visiting the Richmond Bridge. Back in 2005, this bridge was recognized as an exceptional historic site and was even placed in the Australian National Heritage List. The Richmond Bridge is the oldest operational bridge in Australia and was made using sandstones.
The Richmond Gaol is another must-see tourist attraction. This was formerly used to hold convicts and these whitewashed stone structures are the oldest undamaged gaol in the whole Australia. Majority of the gaol edifices have not been altered since the convict times. The Richmond Gaol also includes a sample of an individual confinement cell for females that measures two by one meters. These buildings have a flogging yard, chain group sleeping rooms, holding rooms and a cook house. They also display historical documents and relics.
Another favorite of guests is The Old Hobart Town Model Village. This is Hobart’s model replica in Richmond that was set in 1820. Tourists would see the kind of life that the officers, sailors, convicts and free settlers of the colonial Hobart Town had lived. This would enable people to have knowledge about this intriguing chapter in the early history of both Hobart and Tasmania. This genuine model village is composed of around four hundred period figurines and more than sixty historical Hobart structures.
Tourists would have a grand time at the Olde Time Portraits. They would be able to choose from numerous colonial-style costumes for their portraits. They can be transformed into various identities such as a nineteenth century lady or gentleman. Guests can also put on the uniform of an officer of the city state or they can clutch the chains of a convict. There is truly an endless array of costumes to choose from. Costumes for children are also readily available and people can pick from a sepia-toned portrait or they can also have a “Wanted” or “Reward” poster that goes with their images. Also available here are postcards, gift vouchers, calendars and gift cards.
Antique lovers can have a look at the Richmond Antiques. It boasts of a collection of authentic colonial furniture. Guests can select from pieces that date back from the early eighteenth century, which includes Huon pine from Tasmania, cedar and some lovely Georgian English furniture. The store also offers an assortment of quality glassware, silver, porcelain and Australian pottery. The Richmond Antiques even offers to organize the packing and shipping of their guests’ treasures throughout the country and also overseas.
While tourists are in town, they should also make time for Puddleduck Vineyard. Visitors are invited to visit the small, family-owned vineyard along with their cozy and welcoming cellar door. People would be delighted to enjoy sipping their wines and eating local cheeses while viewing the ducks that puddle on the dam.
There are a wide range of Richmond accommodation available around the town which include hotels, motels, Inns and villas - everything you need to ensure your stay is a comfortable one.
