Dover
Dover is a town located in Houn Valley in Tasmania. It is also situated at the head of Esperance Bay.The calm waters of the bay provide ideal settings for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. On any given day, small boats dot the town's foreshores and provide plenty of opportunities for sailing, either to go fishing or sightseeing. Boats can also be hired to go to the nearby islands of Faith, Hope, and Charity. Faith Island, in particular, is the location of some historic graves that are worth visiting.
The town boasts of a substantial fishing industry, with the largest Atlantic salmon farm in the southern hemisphere located in Dover. The town is also a known producer of abalone and crayfishes.
The white sand beaches of Dover are also popular destinations among holiday makers from all over the state. The sleepy town atmosphere also adds to the charms of Dover and makes it a haven for those wishing to escape the hustle and stress of big city life, even for just a few days.
One major attraction of Dover is the Casey's Living Steam Museum. The museum showcases a collection of old steam cutting engines that were used in the past to cut huon timber. The museum also displays items related to the area's apple-growing industry. Local history is also detailed, including the presence of an old bark hut.
The town also boasts of a historic Commandant Office. Located along Beach Road, the structure harkens back to the time when Dover was designated to become a penal probation station.
There are several interesting destinations located a short drive away from Dover. One is the Hastings Caves State Reserve, where dolomite caves are open for public inspection. Visitors will surely be enthralled with the subterranean interiors of these caves as they participate in guided tours through well-lit caverns. Located a short distance away is the Thermal Springs pool that is complete with all the needed amenities to ensure visitors get to enjoy their time spent soaking in warm waters surrounded by ferns and forested areas. Facilities for picnics are also provided. On the way to Dover, visitors can take the Hastings Forest Tour that leads visitors on an alternate, scenic route back to town.
Another activity that visitors can do is to take the Ida Bay railway that takes visitors to several beautiful spots within the area.
Dover is also located along the fringes of the South West National Park. This particular attraction is considered the largest national park of Tasmania. The park offers a lot of opportunities for bush walking, bird watching, and animal viewing.
Located south of town is the settlement of Cockle Creek, where stunning views of the coast and the hinterland can be enjoyed.
The town also participates in the Huon Tasmanian Salmon Port Esperance Race Weekend. Held every March, this annual sailing event also incorporates music entertainment which food and drinks become abundant. Different sailing vessels participate in this three-day event that is considered the biggest in Dover.
