Devonport & Tasmanian North West Region —Tasmania

Devonport is the principal city of the Tasmanian Northwest region. Located on the Mersey River, it is a river port city and home to the third largest airport in Tasmania. Some of the interesting spots of tourists’ interest in and around the city of Devonport include Home Hill (former residence of Australia’s only Tasmanian Prime Minister, Joseph Lyons), Maritime Museum, Spirit of Tasmania (the only passenger ferry operating across Bass Strait), Tiagarra (the Tasmanian Aboriginal Cultural and Arts Center), Don River Railway and Museum, Tasmanian Arboretum, colony of Fairy Penguins, Port Sorell, Shearwater, Hawley Beach, World Heritage areas of the Cradle Mountain and Lake St. Clair National Park, and plenty more.

Burnie is Tasmania’s fourth-largest city, the fifth-largest container port in Australia, and a major industrial center. King Island, located off the northwest tip of Tasmania, boasts of sandy beaches and jagged cliffs, and is home to more shipwrecks than anywhere else in Australia. King Island’s claim to fame is its fine produce of cream, specialty cheeses, beef and rock lobster.
