Renmark is a town located within the Riverland region of South Australia, situated on the banks of the Murray River. Its place-name was derived from Aboriginal words that translate to `red mud.'
The town holds the distinction of being the oldest European settlement on the river. It is also the location of the first community hotel in the British Empire, the Renmark Hotel established in 1897.
Located across it is the riverboat Murray Princess, a sailing vessel inspired by those that ply the Mississippi River.
However, this paddle steamer is still operational and makes short trips to take passengers up and down the river every first Sunday of every month.
Olivewood, an unusual residence located on 21st Street, is a State Heritage structure built 1889. This attraction is also a museum, with pictures and memorabilia related to early community life, including equipment used in cultivating fruit trees. The estate derived its name from its stand of olive trees and the orchard is known to produce high quality extra virgin olive oil.
To know more about local history, visitors should drop by Harding's Folklore Gallery, along Murtho Street. This gallery features a huge mural depicting colonial life in the country.
The town also has several wineries located within and around its borders. These establishments open their cellar doors and offers wine tasting sessions so visitors can sample their fine wine products. There's the Angove's Winery located on Bookmark Avenue and Renmano Wines on Industry Road. Along Kulkyne Street is the Oak Works Winery which prides itself in using special techniques, foregoing the use of pumps and stainless steel storage, to produce their high quality products.
The whole family will surely enjoy an excursion to Bredl's Wonder World of Wildlife, located on the corner of 28th Street and Sturt Highway. This establishment boasts of a large collection of reptiles, including large numbers of snakes.
For those wishing to enjoy the outdoors, the Cowilla Regional Reserve is their ideal destination. Located a short drive north Renmark, this particular attraction is composed of wetland and floodplain. There are vast strand of trees that are home to numerous varieties of birds. Camping facilities are also provided while bodies of water provide opportunities for fishing and canoeing. The area also has a game reserve where hunting of waterfowls is allowed with permit.
Nearer to town is the Cooltong Conservation Park, which is dedicated to the preservation of mallee vegetation and its associated bird species. This park is ideal for bird watching, though camping is not allowed.
Another interesting destination, especially for nature lovers, is the McCormick Centre for the Environment. Located along Ral Ral Avenue, this establishment is committed to educating the community on environmental issues and promotes its conservation. It also promotes eco-tourism, with the abundance of natural resources at hand.
After a hard day of exploring, visitors may also drop by several of the sporting facilities located within town. One is Renmark Swimming Centre on Cowra Street. Apart from having several swimming pools, the facility also features a waterslide, a mini golf course, and a basketball court.
The town also boasts of its Renmark Country Club, considered one of the best country golf courses in Australia. While playing a round or two, golfing enthusiasts also get to enjoy the facility's beautiful scenery, abundant bird life, and may even encounter a kangaroo or two. Located along Sturt Highway, the golf course is open to visitors any day of the week.
Before leaving Renmark, visitors should drop by Ruston's Roses, considered to be the largest rose garden in the country. Located along Moorna Street, the garden boasts of more than 4000 rose varieties and has a cafe strategically located right in the middle of the garden.
