The structure was built in 1859 and holds the distinction of being the first stone building in town. The building is now owned and maintained by the National Trust. The establishment also offers a walking trail that lead visitors to interesting spots in the area, like the nearby historic graves and what remains of a copper mine.

The trail also leads visitors to the Heron's Bend Reserve, which is a popular outdoor destination in Barmera. The reserve features several sites associated with the Aboriginal people, as well as areas designated for camping and bushwalking.

The ruins of the Napper's Old Accommodation Hotel, located near the lake, can also be visited by those interested in local history.

Another interesting destination is the Rocky's Country Music Hall of Fame, located on Barwell Avenue. The establishment celebrates Australian country music and promotes this music genre to the community. The museum was established in honor of country singer Dean Rocky Page. A walk to the rear of the building will reveal a ten-meter guitar surrounded by concrete guitars bearing handprints of famous country singers.

Visitors can also visit the Bonneyview Winery and Restaurant, located along Sturt Highway. The winery opens its cellar doors to allow guests to sample and purchase their products. Their restaurant specializes in Australian and European dishes and offers an impressive list of wine made right on-site.

The town also boasts of its own Barmera Golf Club, a 72-hole facility accessed via Hawdon Street. The golf course allows visitors to play whenever no major event is being held. Within the course is the Barmera Country Club, which is a favorite venue for special events like parties, wedding receptions, and conferences. There is also a swimming pool, restaurant, bar, playground for children, tennis courts, and an indoor heated spa.

There are several events that draw locals and visitors to town to enjoy days of merrymaking and fun. One is the annual South Australian Country Music Festival And Awards. This particular event is considered the biggest music awards of its kind in the state. Country singers from all over the country converge to Barmera to perform in several live performances. The event is meant to promote the town as the country music capital of South Australia.

Barmera also participates in the Riverland Field Days, held every September. Exhibitions of agricultural and horticultural products are organized and done in several areas of the region. This event aims to promote community spirit and development.
