Limestone Coast — South Australia

Located in the middle of Adelaide to Melbourne touring route is the vast expanse of Limestone Coast. It stretches from the Glenelg River on the Victorian Border to Port MacDonnell, Robe, Tailem Bend and across to Bordertown. The Limestone Coast comprises of the towns of Keith, Millicent, Mount Gambier, Bordertown and Naracoorte.

Limestone Coast is famous for its wine-producing regions of Coonawarra, Padthaway, Wrattonbully and Mount Benson. There are cellar doors throughout the region, which celebrates the Cellar Dwellers event held throughout July. October hosts Coonawarra Cabernet Celebrations. The vintage red wine along with the local delicacies lures all the time for a sumptuous dining experience.

The World Heritage listed Naracoorte Caves are a not-to-be-missed exploratory destination. The exasperating views of stalactites, stalagmites and ancient fossils at the Caves give you another-world experience. Relish the sights of rare southern bent-wing bats at the high-tech Bat Centre, and explore the world of ancient mega fauna at the Wonambi Fossil Centre.

The Coorong National Park, declared a Wetland of International Importance in 1975 is home to the world’s largest breeding colony of Australian pelicans and is also a temporary sanctuary for thousands of migratory birds from all around the world. The history of the land is best narrated by the local Ngarrindjeri Aborigines.

The area also has Mount Gambier, South Australia’s second biggest city, as a prime tourist spot. The Blue Lake, which turns from gray to a brilliant turquoise every November, is definitely on top of your itinerary. This ancient city is built on the slopes of an extinct volcano. The city is also famous for its limestone caves beneath the streets.
