Flinders Ranges and Outback — South Australia

Starting about 200 kilometers north of Adelaide and covering more than 80 percent area of the State of South Australia, the region of Flinders Ranges and Outback is a huge mass of land that extends to the State’s borders in the north, east and west.

Flinders Ranges, South Australia’s largest mountain range stretching for over 400 kilometers from Port Pirie to Lake Callabonna, is also a National Park having great natural resources, and host to some exotic native flora and fauna.

Wilpena Pound is a landmark feature at Flinders Ranges. It is a sickle-shaped natural amphitheater of mountains and boasts of the highest peak of St. Mary Peak at 1170 meters. It’s inner walls and cliffs are covered with vegetation and the Pound is home to some exotic wildlife and gorgeous bushwalking tracks.

Some of other places of interest at Flinders Ranges include the towns of Quorn, Blinman and Port Augusta, Pichi Richi Railway, ancient Aboriginal artworks from the Yourambulla Caves near Hawker to Arkaroo Rock and Sacred Canyon near Wilpena Pound, Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary and plenty more.

Harsh conditions, but some great tourist spots including sandy and stony deserts, salt lakes and arid wetlands mark Outback South Australia. The popular destinations worth visiting at Outback include Sturt’s Stony Desert, the Simpson Desert, the Great Victorian Desert, Lake Eyre, mining towns of Coober Pedy (opal capital of the world), Roxby Downs, Glendambo and Andamooka, the town of Maree, which used to be a center for the Afghan Camel Trains, the town of Innamincka where the 1860 Burke and Willis expedition tragically ended, and many more.
