Eyre Peninsula is a triangular peninsula bordered by the Spencer Gulf to the east, the Great Australian Bight to the west, and by the Gawler Ranges to the North. The Peninsula got its name from its explorer, Edward John Eyre, who explored parts of it in 1839-1841. The major towns of Eyre Peninsula include Whyalla (second largest city in South Australia), Port Lincoln (largest city in the West Coast region), Port Augusta and Ceduna.
Port August to the east and Ceduna to the west are the two entrance towns to the Peninsula. The Peninsula is dotted by two major highways – Lincoln Highway and Flinders Highway.
With 2000 kilometers of coastline, Eyre Peninsula offers one of the best and most relaxed environments to explore its pristine beauty. The Ocean has provided glittering beauty to the peninsula with sandy beaches, rugged rock formations, towering cliffs along the Great Australian Bight, rolling hills, limestone caves and arid desert. Of course, the major highlight is water sports in this region. Spencer Gulf has some sheltered spots that make it safe to indulge in water adventures.
The hinterland of Eyre Peninsula is known for vast tracts of agricultural land. An estimated 10% of Australian wheat is grown in the Peninsula. Most of the land in the Peninsula is set-aside as reserves, parks and native bushland.
Whyalla has a large steel industry in the area. Cowell is home to beautiful Jade Stone. Other places of tourists’ interest include Arno Bay, Tumba Bay, Sir Joseph Banks Islands, which is home to Sea lions, pretty bays and wonderful reefs, Coffin Bay Peninsula National Park, Kellidie Bay Conservation Park, Anxious Bay, Blackfellows, Salmon Point and plenty more.
