South Australia, Australia

South Australia is the state located in the south central part of Australia. With Adelaide as its capital, it is the fifth in the country in terms of population.

There are many wineries and vineyards located within the state. An example of which is the Abbey Rock Wines Cellar Door along Onkaparinga Valley Road in Balhannah, Adelaide Hills. Read more...

Apart from offering wine tasting, the winery also caters to couples or groups of people who wish to use their facilities for picnics and barbecues.

Visitors can also participate in the Adelaide Hills Boutique Winery Trail which takes them to several wineries within the area. Apart from sampling local wine products, visitors may also have picnics in shady groves and enjoy the natural beauty surrounding them.

Another interesting destination would be the Barossa Fruit Wines on Barossa Valley Way in Concordia, Barossa Valley. As the name suggests, this winery produces wines from different fruits except grapes. Apart from their wine products, the winery also features and sells several art works.

Those keen in doing some serious bush walking should visit the Kaiserstuhl Conservation Park, accessed via the Tanunda Creek Road. The park features two walking trails that provide visitors not only of spectacular views but also of opportunities for bird watching and animal viewing.

For those interested in unique experiences while they're in South Australia, the Mount Crawford Forest Reserve should be in their itinerary. Accessed through Warren Road in Williamstown, visitors can try their hand fossicking for gold, opals, and other precious stones. The reserve also offers ample opportunities for bicycling, bush walking, and horse riding.

When passing through Lyndoch, visitors should also take time to stop by the Chateau Barrosa Rose Garden along Hermann Thumm Drive. The garden contains acres and acres of rose bushes that will surely delight the senses. Visitors are free to roam the property and stop by its restaurant, museum, and a winery which produces grape liqueurs.

Children of all ages will love their visit to the Storybook Cottage And Whacky Wood on Oak Street in Tanunda. The cottage contains displays on numerous stories and nursery rhymes while the Wacky Wood features giant puzzles, a music hut, and a picnic hut open to all visitors. The facility also has an animal enclosure that children can pet and feed, as well as a Goblins Garden and a Hobbits Hole.

Visiting the Whispering Wall in Williamstown will yield hours of enjoyment as children can make use of the structure's unique acoustic effects that allows one to hear a whisper made more that 100 meters away. The wall is also part of a reservoir that is ideal for strolling and enjoying scenic views.

The town of Lobethal boasts of one unique attraction, the Fairyland Village on Adelaide Lobethal Road. A walking trail leads visitors to several huts with life-size displays of famous fairy tales, each provided with a storyboard so parents can impart the story to their children. Aside from this delightful activity, the facility is also ideal for bush walking and animal viewing.

Another popular family destination is the Monash Adventure Park on Madison Avenue. The park features a huge maze, a rope bridge, a mini basketball court, and other attractions that will surely entertain the whole family for hours.

South Australia is also known for its numerous festivals and social events that draw visitors from all over the country. Examples of which are long-running Sundays At The Adelaide Festival Centre, which starts from October and culminates in December, the Tour Down Under cycling race, the Compass Cup cow racing in January, and the Barossa Under The Stars in Tanunda.
