Glenelg, Adelaide
Glenelg
Glenelg is a beachside suburb of Adelaide in South Australia. This suburb faces Holdfast Bay and is popular among tourists because of its beautiful beaches. The place-name was given in honor of Lord Glenelg, a former British statesman.
Visitors from central Adelaide need only to take the Glenelg Tram to this seaside suburb. Though modern trams are being used during weekdays, heritage trams also operate during weekends and holidays.
Glenelg prides itself for having several attractions suited for the whole family. Example of which is the BeachHouse, an amusement arcade located on Colley Terrace. Visitors will get to enjoy its waterslides and a five-storey high Play Castle. Different rides are also available, like the 19th century carousel considered to be the country's oldest, the Dodgem Cars, the Bumper Boats, and the Train. Adults will get to enjoy playing arcade games, indulge in the mini golf facility, or simply sit down and have a break at the cafe.
Another interesting destination for young and old alike is the Rodney Fox Shark Experience. This establishment, on Moseley Square, is the fruit of the research and expeditions made by shark attack survivor Rodney Fox. The museum contains films, photographs, and a collection of shark teeth fossils. Fox is also instrumental in the establishment of the Fox Shark Research Foundation which focuses on the Great While Shark and its environmental role. Thrill seekers and scuba diving enthusiasts may also take part in the cage-diving expeditions offered by Fox and immerse themselves in the sharks' natural habitat.
A museum of different kind is also located in the same building occupied by the shark museum. The Bay Discovery Centre is focused on exhibiting items and collections related to the cultural heritage of the area and of the Holdfast Bay, in general. The center also exhibits artworks made by artists living in South Australia. The establishment is housed in the historic Glenelg Town Hall, which was constructed in1877.
Aboriginal art works are also sold at the Aboriginal Art Gallery located on Anzac Highway. For those interested in purchasing paintings, a visit to the Glenelg Art Gallery is in order. Located along Moseley Street, this particular gallery sells landscapes and local scenes by artists from all over the country.
Those yearning for more urban types of leisure will surely find a stroll along Jetty Road both enjoyable and relaxing. This avenue is a popular destination for those wishing to indulge in al fresco dining as well as browse in several shops and stores lining the road. There are also several historic buildings and structures located along Jetty Road, some built at the early part of the 19th century. This area is also popular location for weekend markets and live entertainment.
On Macfarlane Street is the Old Gum Tree, which serves as background when the proclamation of South Australia as a province was read in 1836. The tree is also a prominent part of the Proclamation Trail, which starts at the Town Hall and ends at the Colley Reserve. The trail leads participants to several sites with great historic significant to the suburb and the whole of Holdfast Bay.
