Adelaide Hills, South Australia

Whether it’s through a 40-minute drive from the Adelaide International Airport or a 20-minute drive from the city of Adelaide, Adelaide Hills awaits the traveler who seeks more of that rich Australian countryside experience. Right at the Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide is considered one of Australia’s fastest-growing towns with a population of about nine and a half thousand that seems to grow every year since the first European settlers arrived in the town. The German settlements of Lobethal and Hahndorf are two old settlements worth noting. No wonder there is this strong German cultural orientation particularly in its Lutheran schools, churches, and significant number of residents who still speaks German. Most notable of its German cultural heritage is the Lobethal Christmas lights, which dates back to the 1950s.

Most especially in the summer, driving through the hills in this region is already thought of as a pastime. With its serene, mild, and lush green summers, Adelaide becomes a favorite not just of residents but of tourists as well. As one of the oldest wine-producing regions in Australia, Adelaide Hills celebrates an annual Adelaide Hills Wine Festival where a taste of Adelaide wine is surely irresistible. People also come to Adelaide because of its Oakbank Easter Racing Carnival, the region’s most-awaited horse racing festival; Heysen Festival of the Arts, named after Sir Hans Heysen who is a distinguished Australian artist, which features the art exhibits and performances from this southern town’s local artists; and its Tour Down Under, a cycling event you don’t want to miss, if you happen to come to Adelaide.

Adelaide is especially priced for its wine industry, which dates back to the year 1839, when the first vines were planted. Since then, Adelaide Hills have grown to be a center of the finest wine shops and producers in Australia. After South Australia was declared as a province, historical accounts point out to Queen Victoria receiving a case of wine from the first produce of its vineyard. About 50 wineries, which includes cellars and tasting joints, were counted in a recent survey of the area, making the Hills heaven-on-earth, or more specifically, heaven-in-a-wine-glass, for wine-lovers. If you stay in a nearby hotel, find the time to walk leisurely around town, where you’ll get to see these wine shops and bars, simply offering the best wines in this southern town.

Nature lovers and travelers would also want to consider Adelaide Hills, as the area has numerous natural parks waiting for the willing traveler. Places of note are the Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary and the Mouth Lofty Botanic Garden. Both places provide excellent spots for picnics and other outdoor activities. The Yurrebilla Trail is likewise perfect for walking and hiking, the best way to enjoy the breath-taking scenery of the Hills. Adelaide Hills is also the right place to seek inspiration., as the Heysen home and studio, also known as The Cedars, allows a peek into the works of this region’s primary artist, Sir Hans Heysen. If you’re into cars, check the National Motor Museum, a place rich in automobile history.
