Hamilton Island is one of the Islands of the Whitsundays located very near the Great Barrier Reef. This island is known as a popular holiday destination for those seeking to enjoy the sun and the beach at its fullest. This popularity has fueled the establishment of a thriving commercial activity in designated areas, where restaurants and accommodations flourished.

Hamilton Island is easily accessible through direct flights from nearby metropolitan cities like Sydney, Brisbane, Cairns, and Melbourne. There is also the Fantasea Blue Ferries Service from Shute Harbour.

Visitors to the island have the choice of lazing their day away at the beach, or do some of the recreational activities offered. Apart from swimming, there's reef fishing, kayaking, canoeing, sailboard riding, and jet skiing.

There are also several companies offering cruises around Hamilton Island and the other nearby islands. The selections include the Barefoot Cruises, the Cruise Indigo, and MV Fantasea Ammari.

Scuba diving is also a popular activity among locals and visitors. At Gary's Lagoon Dive Site, beginners and expert divers will surely find something worthwhile to explore underwater. The site boasts of extensive coral cover as well as abundant marine life that will surely impart an unforgettable experience to those adventurous enough to give scuba diving a try. Snorkeling is also a good option for those preferring to stay on the water's surface. Expert divers and guides are at hand to provide assistance at all times.

Another ideal diving spot is the Manta Ray Drop Off where underwater cliffs can be behold. The name is derived from Manta Rays that pass through this area during winter months. The dive site also consists of a plunging wall of corals that is home to a variety of fishes and other marine animals. This spectacular view can also be seen by those preferring to snorkel along the water surface.

Another source of exciting snorkeling and scuba diving experience can be found at the Stepping Stones Dive Site. The area has flat coral pinnacles, as well as several underwater caves and channels open for exploration.

Trips to the Great Barrier Reef can also be experienced by renting yachts and catamarans maintained by Sunsail Australia. The whole family can come along, for children are welcomed in these trips.

A large part of Hamilton Island is under the administration of the National Parks and Wildlife. Bushwalking, bird watching, and animal viewing are some of the popular land-based activities available to visitors. Designated walks are provided leading to several scenic spots on Hamilton Island, like Coral Cove, Escape Beach, and Passage Peak.

With the influx of tourists from the rest of the country and the world, several Hamilton Island accommodation establishments were built on the island. This accommodation range from the budget types to luxurious resorts and hotels.

Dominating Hamilton Island's landscape is the Reef View Hotel, composed of 19 storeys and offers luxury rooms and amenities. The most expensive suites cost well over AU$1000.And if that is expensive, then a night's stay at Qualia can be considered exorbitant. This resort, located at the northern part of the island, has room rates reaching AU$3000 per night.
