Located in Herberton Road, the temple is owned and maintained by the National Trust of Queensland and offers guided tours within the property. Visitors will get to appreciate the temple's ornate interiors, view the numerous artifacts showcased, and enjoy the interactive displays found in the interpretive museum located within the temple. International Chinese communities regard the Hou Wang Temple with significance, being the only temple located outside China that is dedicated to its namesake.

Near the temple and also on Herberton Road is Platypus Park, a popular picnic spot for families. Built on a freshwater stream, the park's five platypuses share the area with ducks and swans.

Another natural attraction found within the town's boundaries would be the Hallorans Hill Lookout. A walk through the Hallorans Hill Conservation Park will lead to a viewing platform that affords sweeping views of scenic farmlands surrounding Atherton. The spot is also perfect for bird watching and viewing spectacular sunsets, while several sculptures and a playground is located a short walk away. The park itself is a good place for camping and bicycling.

All things bright, shiny, and wonderful can be found at the Fascinating Facets and The Crystal Caves located at the end of Vernon Street. This man-made underground museum is a big crowd-drawer in the area with its displays of crystals and fossils. Interesting displays include a new classification crystal geode and an amethyst geode that is considered the largest in the world. Souvenirs in the form of jewelries and cut crystals are available in its on-site shop.

Though there are several attractions found within the town, Atherton is more recognized for the natural beauty surrounding it. One popular tourist destination is Mount Hypipamee National Park accessible through the Kennedy Highway. The park is included in the World Heritage List and has the Crater as its main attraction. The Crater is actually a volcanic pipe used as vent for escaping gases, and there is a clear lake at the bottom. Some visitors get to experience spotlighting for different animals found in the area. Picnic and bird watching spots are also provided within the park and in the nearby Dinner Falls.

Equally interesting and located nearer to the town would be the Hasties Swamp National Park. This wetland is a well-known bird watching destination. A bird hide is provided so visitors can view different species of birds in convenience. Camping is also permitted.

Avid fishing enthusiasts will surely enjoy their visit to Tinaroo Dam, constructed on Barron River. A lot of visitors also visit the dam to have picnics, go cycling, or indulge in several water sports available in the area. There are also dining establishments as well as different kinds of accommodations for those wishing to spend the night.
