Cairns city, considered as the capital city of Tropical North Queensland, is located on what once was swamp. With a population of 128,284, Cairns boasts of being the 16th largest city of Australia. Historically, during the World War II, Cairns was used by the Allied Forces as a staging base for operations in the Pacific.
Cairns is the international gateway into Tropical North Queensland and strategically located near the World Heritage Sites of The Great Barrier Reef and The Daintree National Park. The distance of 1600 miles from Sydney and 1070 miles from Brisbane looks short when the natural beauty of Cairns meets the eyes. It takes approximately 4 hours by plane from Brisbane to reach the much-touted 'safest tropical city in the world'.
