
Goondiwindi is a town situated on the banks of MacIntyre River, west of Brisbane, Queensland. It is near the state’s boundary to New South Wales. The place-name was derived from an Aboriginal word that means ‘the resting place of the birds.’
The town is a major producer of agricultural produce and beef. Because of its proximity to state border, it is also a bustling hub of trucking and transportation. Shopping is also a popular activity in Goondiwindi, both by locals and out-of-towners.
One interesting as well as historic structure of the town is the Customs House that has been converted into the Goondiwindi Museum. History buffs and interested individuals can visit the museum to view artifacts associated with the history of the town and its surrounding areas. An old cottage stands by the museum, a charming addition to this quaint srtructure.
Another historic structure in Goondiwindi is the Victoria Hotel which holds a past connection with the Aborigines. The hotel also houses different memorabilia related to horses, perhaps in homage to the famous race horse Gunsynd, which originated from this town. A statue of the horse stands at Apex Park in MacIntyre Street.
A visit to the MacIntyre Ginnery would yield information and knowledge on how local cotton is processed. This ginnery is unique in that it offers a short tour around its facilities and aims to educate the public on this industry.
Other points of interests within the town would the Civic Centre, where the structure bears an intricate Art Deco façade. There is also the Goondiwindi War Memorial that commemorates the two World Wars and is a continuing expression of Australian patriotism.
The Goondiwindi Botanic Gardens is located in the Western Woodlands, and serves as cultivating grounds for rare plant species. This is also an ideal spot for leisurely walks with families and friends.
Those interested in wildlife conservation and sanctuary can visit Boobera Lagoon found west of the town. Visitors come here for its natural attractions, as well as to swim and have picnics. A part of the lagoon have been closed off to powerboats, and resulted in the development of the Natural Heritage and Water Park. A popular destination for families and friends, the water park is suitable for various water-based recreations like boating and paddle canoeing.
Apart from the above-mentioned Apex Park, Goondiwindi has several other parks, most of which provide ample space for children’s playgrounds, picnic shelters, public toilets, and barbecue facilities.
Other amenities that are located within this town include a public library and an indoor sports center.
The town also has several community events organized to promote merrymaking and goodwill among residents and visitors. Examples of these are the Spring Festival in October and the Rodeo in November.
