Longreach, Outback, Queensland

Longreach is located in the central part of Queensland, west of the city of Rockhampton. The place-name was derived from the town’s location near the ‘long reach’ of the Thomson River. Accessible through air and land, Longreach is a favorite tourist destination for several reasons.

Its most popular attraction would the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame. Its exhibits and interactive galleries chronicle the pioneering history of the country. A visit to this structure will enhance one’s knowledge on how Australia was explored, settled, and developed. Information on the Aboriginal people is also showcased, along with their cave paintings and artifacts. This attraction is a major income generator of the town.

The town also has strong connections with one of the country’s biggest airlines, Quantas. The airlines had its first booking office in Longreach, while the town is also the departure point of its first commercial flight. The town revels in its rich aviation history, with the conversion of the original hangar into the Quantas Founders Outback Museum. A donated Boeing 747-200 and a newly restored Boeing 707 comprise the museum’s prime attractions.

Those with interests in education will find enjoyment in several of the city’s educational institutions. First is the Longreach School of Distance Education which is considered one of the largest classrooms in the world. Tours are conducted by the local Parents Teachers Association around the center. At the Longreach campus of the Australian Agricultural College, motel-style accommodations can be had and visitors get to observe high-quality trainings for different agricultural and rural industries.

Amusement is the central attraction at the Banjo's Outback Theatre and Woolshed, where the pioneering life is depicted through several comic characters and situations. Meanwhile, the attraction of the Longreach Powerhouse Museum would be that of a mechanized kind. The museum houses a large collection of machinery and equipment used in rural life, particularly in farming.

History buffs can also swing by the Jacksons Weapons Museum for a look at several war-related memorabilia. This museum is located in Cassowary Street and is open to the general public free of charge.

Nature lovers will also find a lot of places of interests in Longreach. Nearby is the Forest Den National Park, where visitors can have their picnics at the banks of Torrens Creek. The national park supports a wide diversity of wildlife, and is a perfect spot for bird watching. Bushwalking is also another popular activity. Bird watching and animal viewing can also be done at the Lochern National Park, where a newly discovered subspecies of turtle can be found. This area is also ideal for camping and picnics. 4WD vehicles can be rented for exploration of the park’s Bluebush Lagoon circuit drive. The Thompson River also runs through this national park, providing plenty of opportunities for swimming and canoeing.

And to get better perspective on the landscape of Longreach and all around it, visitors take a short ride to Starlight’s Lookout to enjoy the scenery.

Also, with the availability of numerous accommodations and retail establishments, including restaurants and shopping centers, urban travelers to this town won’t have a hard time settling in and feeling right at home.
