Charters Towers, Outback, Queensland

Charters Towers is a city located in the northern part of Queensland. Known for its mining history, the city is now known as a destination for a more laidback, casual way of life compared to that found in other metropolitan cities. Besides mining, the city also has a big beef industry, supported by its rural countryside.

In manifestation of its glorious mining past, there are several historic buildings in Charters Towers, most of which are concentrated in its Mosman and Gill Streets. The Zara Clark Museum, in Mosman, holds the distinction of being owned and maintained by the National Trust, and showcases several memorabilia, including vintage vehicles. Another interesting structure is located on the same street, the City Hall. These buildings are including in guided walking tours offered in the city. Other famous stops along Mosman Street are the Royal Arcade and the World Theatre, while in Gill Street, there’s the Post Office and the building formerly occupied by the Bank of New South Wales. Further south is the Towers Hill Lookout, where one can observe the panorama of the city. Other historic sites would the Charters Towers and Pioneer Cemeteries, where the city’s notable figures in the past were buried, and the Historic Ambulance Centre, where history buffs and enthusiasts will have a field day exploring its collection of old vehicles and other memorabilia. The Boer War Memorial Rotunda in Lissner Park is noted for its beautiful styling, and serves to commemorate the victims of World War I. The park is especially beautiful at night, where strategically placed lights provide a relaxing, almost romantic ambience. In daylight, the park is a popular spot for barbecues and picnics.

Outdoor enthusiasts will also find numerous things to do in Charters Towers. The city’s proximity to Burdekin River provides ample opportunities for fishing, swimming, and camping. Hiking and bird watching can also be done at nearby Ravenswood.

Within the city limits are several sporting venues and facilities to encourage exercise and physical fitness among residents. The Centenary Park provides a good place for jogging, hiking, and bicycling.

One popular sporting event held annually in Charters Towers is the Goldfield Ashes, a cricket competition participated by more than 100 teams. This event not only earns the city substantial amount of profits, it also provides residents with ample reasons for socialization and merrymaking.

Another reason why tourists flock to Charters Towers would be the 10 Days in the Towers/Country Music Festival, an annual event commemorating the city’s rich past with music, arts, and cultural events.
