The is a myriad of popular attractions that can be found just outside the urban city centre. The Townsville segment of the renowned Great Green Way includes an overwhelming number of national parks, beaches and Rainforest Mountains. The National Parks of Bernard Island, Edmund Kennedy, Tully Gorge, Murray Upper and Fitzroy Island, among many others are all home to a rich wildlife and plant life, along with woodlands that offer only the most beautiful sceneries. There are a variety of botanic gardens to enjoy nature in as well. These include the Queens Garden (includes the Townsville botanic garden), the Anderson Park and the Billabong Sanctuary.

Townsville is located on the edge of the Pacific, such that there are wonderful opportunities for water recreation which can include cruises to the Magnetic, Dunk and Hinchinbrook Islands, all of which are equipped with snorkelling and diving facilities for only the best kind of adventure.

The city of Townsville is not only rich in natural attractions, but is properly endowed in terms of history. The heritage of the region has been largely shaped by the Aboriginal tribes, pastoralists, miners and the war. The remnants of these times are still very much evident and can be seen through the many historic pubs, colonial architecture, museums, as well as the showcases of gold mining machinery displays and cottages.

The city of Townsville draws in hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. To cater to their needs, there are a hundreds of options for accommodations around the city, ranging from luxurious resorts to the comforts of Bed and Breakfasts, to hotels, motels, camping and caravan parks, backpacker hostels and apartments. The city also has a diverse range of eating places and restaurants that well-represent the different cuisines of the world. It also has a very vibrant nightlife with various pubs and nightclubs where music groups often perform.

At certain months, there are various exhibitions and shows to enjoy in Townsville. A few festivals are also held that range from street fiestas, food and wine parties and outdoor movie festivals. The Annual Australian Festivals of Chamber Music runs in July and attracts international and Australian musicians. The Annual Greek and Italian Festivals are also popular with the locals and tourists, as well as the annual Great Tropical Jazz Party held on the Magnetic Island. Indeed, Townsville has many things to offer for everyone.
