North Coast, Queensland

The North Coast region of Queensland is composed of towns, villages, and cities located between Bowen and Cairns. This coastal part of the state is a known destination of holidaymakers who wish to enjoy the perpetual sunshine and crystal clear waters of the Coral Sea.

This area also boasts of several attractions meant for the whole family. One is the Johnstone River Crocodile Farm in Innisfail. This farm, located along the Flying Fish Point Road, actually aims to educate its visitors on the breeding, conservation, and habits of these reptiles. For those looking to view a large variety of unusual animals, a visit to the Cairns Night Zoo is in order. Located along the Captain Cook Highway, this establishment offers spotlighting tours for native animals calling the area home. Guides are on hand to accompany visitors around. There is also an entertainment area that serves delicious meals and refreshments before and after the tour.

On the other hand, visitors to the Billabong Sanctuary will get to experience an entirely different kind of entertainment and learning. This sanctuary, located in Townsville, is actually an interactive center where visitors get to cuddle and hold several of its animals. Kangaroos are also free ranging and visitors may get to encounter them when following some of the nature trails featured within the area. The sanctuary also has excellent breeding programs for several endangered animal species.

Still yet another attraction worth a visit by the whole family is the Reef HQ Aquarium, also located in Townsville. This is considered as the largest living coral reef aquarium in the world, featuring a walk-through tunnel that serves as a window to the reef ecosystem, composing of various marine creatures and different types of corals. The establishment is also considered as a national reef education centre, allowing visitors to learn more about the North Coast. This attraction is located along Flinders Street East.

Needless to say, North Coast Queensland also offers a lot of natural attractions and sights. An example of which is the Josephine Falls, located within the Wooroonooran National Park near Babinda. A short and easy walk takes visitors to a viewing platform, located at the base of Mount Bartle Frere, considered to be the state’s highest mountain. The waterfalls are surrounded by a forest that is home to several bird and animal species. Elsewhere in the park is a lookout that is situated atop the North Johnstone River, which is also ideal for white-water rafting. Other waterfalls still located within this national park are the Nandroya Falls, Tchupala Falls, and the Wallicher Falls.

Near Cardwell is the Girringun National Park, which also features its own Blencoe Falls. This natural attraction is also the starting point for the Juwun Walk, which takes visitors across beautiful bush land and scenic gorges. Visitors also get the chance to glimpse some of the native animals, including kangaroos, emus, and different bird species.

For some, a visit to the North Coast would not be complete without scuba diving. There are several spectacular dive sites located within the area. One of which would be the Caves and Canyons Dive Site on Hook Reef, a part of the famous North Coast. This particular dive site is accessed via the Airlie Beach. In Hamilton Island, the Bait Reef and Gary’s Lagoon are its more popular diving destinations. These sites boast of excellent coral cover and myriad of marine creatures that will enthrall any diver. Off Townsville is another popular dive site, the Davies Reef, composed of small caves and pinnacles.
