
Magnetic Island is a popular holiday destination in the eastern coast of Queensland. People from nearby Townsville and from the rest of the country visit this island either for rest and relaxation, or for fun and adventure. The island's curious name was given by Captain Cook, who reportedly observed a magnetic effect on his compass when passing by. This theory remains yet to be proven.
