Mermaid Waters is not actually inhabited by the well-known folklore creatures. It was named after the ship that brought John Oxley to Gold Coast in the nineteenth century. The exact place where he landed was called Mermaid Beach. Its western portion is now Mermaid Waters.

There are plenty of man-made canals and lakes in the area. Moreover, there are several real estate developments that occur every year.
