Located in the southernmost part of the Gold Coast, with a population of about 4000 people, is the airport suburb of Coolangatta. There is an interesting piece of history associated with the naming of Coolangatta. In 1770, Captain Cook sailed past Coolangatta and the Gold Coast and named both Point Danger and Mount Warning for the apparent danger the area presented to ships navigating off the Gold Coast. Despite Cook's efforts, in 1846, a ship called Coolangatta wrecked off the coast and the town was named in its honor.

Coolangatta is better known alongside its twin town of Tweed Heads as the towns with a shared economy. The gateway to the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers of New South Wales, Coolangatta is a small and sleepy coastal town. It plays host to Gold Coast's only two North facing beaches providing sheltered conditions for swimming - Greenmount Beach and Rainbow Bay. The patrolled beaches are surfers' delight.

Coolangatta also hosts the Gold Coast Airport, which is a domestic and international airport. An estimated two million passengers use this airport annually. A railway station at the airport is also in the pipeline that will make Brisbane Airport and Gold Coast Airport the first in Australia to be connected by rail.
