Moreton Island

Moreton Island

Photo Gallery Photo Gallery

Moreton Island in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, is the second biggest sand island in the world. However, it is not as well-developed as the other islands in the country. In fact, a big portion of the island is converted into national parks, and there are only three villages that you can find in here. Nevertheless, it also means that you will find a natural haven here in Moreton Island. The beach is truly inviting, while you can always explore the rainforests and the growing shrubs and trees in the area. There are also different kinds of marine species that populate the waters.

To get to Moreton Island, you need to take a ferry boat from Brisbane, which is around 40 kilometers away from the island. It takes less than 1.5 hours for you to travel to Moreton Island, especially if you’re riding a very fast catamaran. You may have to check out the fares, though, as they may differ depending on the boat operators. When you’re already on the island, you have to move around the different locations through a 4-wheel-drive. You can have it rented, or you can bring your own. Whatever is your choice, you must make sure that you have the necessary permit to use it.

In Moreton Island, you can enjoy some water activities like scuba diving. The underwater is besieged with so many ship wrecks and abundant coral reefs and marine species, allowing you to fully enjoy your scuba diving moments. The resort also has a diving tour, if you want to have a professional diving instructor with you all throughout your time under the water.

One of the most looked-forward to creatures in the island are the wild dolphins, most notably the bottlenose species. You can find them swimming so fast into the sand hills. A visitor can interact with them, such as feeding them. Of course, you may just want to observe them. Normally, the resort will have scheduled activities for the guests, so you may want to take note of them.

You can also take your quad bikes and your 4-wheel-drives into the sand dunes. Mt. Tempest is one of the most stabilized and the tallest sand dune that you will find in the whole world. You can sand-tobogganing with friends or family. You can also join biking tours.

There are also historical places in Moreton Island. One of the most significant is the lighthouse. In fact, it is the oldest that you will find in entire Queensland. Its light was first list during Valentine’s Day of 1857. However, its purpose really had nothing to do with love. It was built in order to guide the growing number of ships that travel through the island and in the nearby bodies of water, such as Moreton Bay. For a long time, it was very useful, since it was the first and the only lighthouse to do so.

Most definitely, a trip to Moreton Island will never be complete without going to the national park. You can take advantage of the unspoiled beaches and the camping grounds, where you can pitch tents on the shores. There are also several walking or hiking trails that you can go to.

To experience Moreton Island at its best, there are many Moreton Island accommodation providers available to ensure all visitors enjoy a comfortable stay.
