Brisbane's CBD is located in a peninsula of the Brisbane River, on its northern bank. This district is more popularly termed as “the City.” This area is delineated from the rest of the city in the north by parklands, and the suburbs of Spring Hill and Fortitude Valley. Spring Hill is one of the oldest neighborhoods of Brisbane, and within it are several historic homes. Other interesting features of this area are the Spring Hills Bath and The Windmill at Wickham Park. Northeast of the district is Fortitude Valley, another suburb that, alongside Spring Hill, is well-known for its gay community. Read more..
One interesting feature of Brisbane's CBD would be the rule of designating its streets after the names of royalty under the House of Hanover, with the Queen Street as the central thoroughfare.
As the name alludes, Brisbane's CBD is a main commercial center of the city. There are a lot of office buildings within the area. There are also structures that house governmental offices, like the State Law Building on George Street, the City Hall on Ann Street, the General Post Office between the Queen and Elizabeth Streets, and the Parliament House at the corner of George and Alice Streets.
Also found within the district are several historic structures like The Mansions, which are Victorian terrace houses located at the corner of George and Margaret Streets and are included in the Queensland Heritage List. Sharing this distinction is the Old Government House in Alice Street. Another historic building would be the Customs House, now used as venue for concerts and art exhibits.
Another interesting feature of Brisbane's CBD would be the ANZAC Square, where the Shrine of Memories is located. This square also contains statues and memorials related to the two World Wars.
Visitors to this Queensland city also take time to visit the Cathedral of Saint Stephen, where Brisbane’s Catholic worshippers convene.
On the southern part of the peninsula is the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens, which is a popular recreation and relaxation spot for dwellers and office workers in the district.
Also located within Brisbane's CBD is the Gardens Point campus of the Queensland University of Technology, one of the largest educational institutions in the country. The campus is adjacent to the botanic gardens.
