Outback, Northern Territory

The Outback region of the Northern Territory is a remote and arid area that offers a unique and exciting experience for anyone adventurous enough to explore it. There are numerous organized tours offered for this, though individuals can arrange their own trips to the Outback, though sufficient planning and experience is a must. Read more...

Most of the towns and attractions of the area can be reached through four-wheel vehicles.

There are several natural attractions that draw visitors from all over the world. One is the Watarrka National Park, where the famous Kings Canyon is located. This national park is ideal for bushwalking and off-road driving, which provides visitors with breathtaking views along the way.

Another interesting destination is the Finke Gorge National Park, which boasts of an oasis called Palm Valley and a natural amphitheater. The park also offers several nature walks, the Mpaara Walk and the Mpulungkinya Walk, which allow visitors to get acquainted with the ways of the native Aboriginal people.

An area also well-connected with the Aboriginal people is the Ewaninga Rock Carvings Conservation Reserve, where its prehistoric engravings are estimated to be 30,000 years old or more. The site also features a claypan that is visited regularly by animals and birds for the water it retains.

A visit to the Native Gap Conservation Reserve, located north of the town of Alice Springs, will also yield some information on the Aboriginal people. The area is considered sacred to them, while a picnic area is designated for those wishing to sit back and enjoy the natural beauty surrounding the reserve.

South of Alice Springs is the Camels Australia where visitors get to ride these desert animals. The area is surrounded by extensive bush land and also exhibits Aboriginal artworks in its shop.

For those serious on browsing through and purchasing local art works, a visit to the Mulgara Gallery is a must. Housed within the Sails in the Desert Hotel in Yulara, the gallery features and sells locally-made glassworks, pottery, textiles, jewelry, and more.

Also a good source of Aboriginal art is the Indigenous art market located within the Alice Springs Desert Park on Larapinta Drive. The items sold in the market are also quite affordable, priced no more than 200 AUD. Held twice in a year, the event also goes on well into the night, with several local films shown and the availability of delicious food.

At the Lightning Ridge Opal Mines located in Alice Springs, a showroom full of this gemstone and jewelry pieces made of them will bedazzle each and every visitor. The establishment also offers several polished opals and jewelry for sale. The staff also makes sure that no visitor leaves without knowing a bit about the history of opal mining in the country.

There are also several events held with the Outback landscape as backdrop. During August, the town of Tennant Creek come alive with the Desert Harmony Art and Cultural Festival. Parade, music performances, dances, and art exhibits are organized to celebrate the town’s culture and its beautiful, if rugged, surroundings. Most of the festivities are centered at the Battery Hill Mining Centre.

Also held in the same site is the Barkly Campdraft and Rodeo, done every October. Those interested in rodeos will surely get their fill with numerous events organized for the enjoyment of everyone. Examples of which are barrel racing, stockman’s challenge, and bronco riding. Camping facilities are also provided for that authentic outback experience.

There are numerous Outback accommodation options to choose from to ensure all visitors enjoy a comfortable stay
