
Situated 320 kilometers southeast of Darwin and home to about 10,000 people, the third largest settlement in the Northern Territory, is the vast Katherine region. Situated on the banks of Katherine River, the region is predominantly tropical savanna woodland and rocky escarpment country. Explorer John McDouall Stuart, who visited the region in 1862, named it after the daughter of one of his expedition sponsors.
