Kakadu & Arnhem Land — Northern Territory

Arnhem Land is 97,000 square kilometers of Aboriginal Land situated on the northeastern corner of the Northern Territory. This region was named by Matthew Flinders after the Dutch ship Arnhem that explored Australia’s northern coast in 1623. It is a beautiful region bounded by Kakadu National Park, Arafura Sea and the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Arnhem Land is one of the largest unspoiled areas in the world with deserted islands, massive coastline, exotic marine life, plunging gorges and thick rainforests. The region is home to the indigenous Yolgnu people who are known for their rich cultural heritage. Oenpelli town is famous for its bark painting, rock art and sand sculptures. This region has a place in the history as the originating area of didjeridu. Only authorized tour operators are allowed to take the visitors to the area due to concerns for Aboriginal culture. Some of the other interesting spots here include Cobourg and Gove Peninsulas, Mt. Borradaile, Cobourg Marine Park, Gurig National Park, Port Esslington, and mining regions of Nhulunbuy and Groote Eylandt.

Kakadu is also an Aboriginal Land stretching 100 kilometers west to east and 200 kilometers south from the coast. It has some marvelous places and features worth visiting. Kakadu is a National Park and a World Heritage Site, and located within the Alligator Rivers Region. Kakadu got its name from the mispronunciation of ‘Gagudju’, which is the name of an Aboriginal language spoken in the northern part of the Park.

The National Park is rich in water features (billabongs, rivers, lakes, waterfalls etc.), creeks, exotic plant and animal life, walking trails, campsites, and Aboriginal Art (primarily, rock art, and sand sculptures). The Mary River is renowned for excellent fishing opportunities. Barramundi and crocodiles can be commonly sighted along the river. Some of the other interesting spots in the region include the towns of Ubirr, Jamiru and Nourlangie.

Though an isolated place, this region is rich in exciting tourist destinations. Book with us NOW avail the cheap Kakadu and Arnhem Land accommodation bookings in the region to make your stay comfortable and affordable.
